Alternatives to Joseph?

My husband's grandfather's name was Joseph.  He was known to my husband as "grandpa Joe" and my husband is still called by his grandma "Joe jr.".  His grandfather passed away a little over two years ago.  My husband is very set on naming our child after him if we have a boy.  I would like to honor this request, with out using Joseph as a first name if possible.  I have always said, even before I knew my husband, that I never wanted a Joe.  I do realize that Joey could be the nickname, but as he would be named after his grandfather who was called "Joe" I doubt my husband would stick to "joey".

Does anyone have any suggestions for alternative names that could maybe make us both happy?

I am open to using it as a middle name, my husband really wants it as a first name.

Also, I have been thinking about the possibility of Joel.  My hisband's father's name is Les (Leslie) and I thought that might be a good way to honor both of them.  But I am definitely open to other suggestions!  Thank you!

Re: Alternatives to Joseph?

  • I like Joel a lot as a compromise.

Otherwise, maybe you could check out foreign variations of Joseph and see if any appeal to you?

What about Keeping Joseph and then calling him a different nickname Jojo, Seph, use his first and middle initial (exp JP), or even Jose or Josh.

  • I think you should go with Joseph, it's the best way to truly honor a man named Joseph, and it's a great timeless name. I have a son Joseph and we call him by a variety of names- Joseph, Joey, and JoeJoe. We never call him just Joe. I'm sure when he gets older his friends will call him Joe. To me, my husband is Joe and my son is Joey.

  • Is just using Joseph as a middle name instead of a first name an option?  You can still honor his grandpa, and then call the child whatever name you both choose.
