  • yepp.  my son is 2 and a month.  hes very talkative...just not real words yet.  he says mom alot, and can say certain words once in awhile like banana.  he also makes some animal noises.  he points to all his body parts and listens to directives really well.  he just isnt using real words yet.  i think hes stubborn and takes after me lol.  also he doesnt have any close kids to play with so its just him telling me or dad what he needs.  i enrolled him in a 2 hour "school" to see if that would jump start things.  we will see!

  • Both my kids. DD talked all the time, but not much that we could understand until three and then she got much better. I had her checked by EI at 2 and she was diagnosed with an articulation disorder. She has been in speech therapy since 2-1/2, it took six months from the time of diagnosis until she was fully enrolled in the program. Her therapist said she should "graduate" from the program before kindergarten.
DS turned two two months ago. On his birthday he had two words- mom and dad. I called EI and by the time he was evaluated a month later he had 25+ words and now a month later he has 100+ words. He didn't end up qualifying for speech therapy, but he has improved leaps and bounds on his own in a very short time.

If you are concerned call Early Intervention for your county and have your child evaluated!

  • My two year old didn't and when we had him reevaluated at 2.5 he was diagnosed with apraxia. We do regular speech therapy and he's come leaps and bounds since we started. Definitely not where he should be but improving every day. If you are concerned push for an evaluation...I paid out of pocket for ours.
  • My DD had about 5 words when she turned 2.  She has been in speech therapy since she was 17 mos.  She was also recently diagnosed with apraxia of speech.

I would absolutely call EI.  Speech therapy has been great for both of us.  It has helped us communicate more effectively with each other and improved her confidence.  She just turned 3 and has over 100+ words and can put 4- 5 words together.  I would talk to your pedi about a referral.  You shouldn't have to pay for the evaluation.
  • My DD didn't talk much and was evaluated by EI at 18mo, she qualified but we wanted to give her a little more time. When she started school at 2 yrs 2 mo it was like BOOM word explosion! I guess being around other kids and not having her needs met 24-7 forced her to use words.
