Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Sign Language

At almost 15 months, DS finally is signing to us (we've signing to him for a long time).  He still has no words and I think he may be a bit delayed in expressive language (we are bilingual family), so I think teaching him to sign will help him get his points across.

Right now he signs for "more" "please" "eat".

Which other signs have you taught your LO and have found them useful that help your LO express themselves?

Re: Sign Language

  • DS signs "thank you" in addition to the 3 your LO already does.  We haven't been successful in getting him to use any other signs (he is 18.5 months).  But since he has quite a number of words already, we are not focusing too much on it.  He is very good at pointing!

  • Help, thank you, eat, please, more, drink, bye/hi,

Working on dirty (for dirty diaper), outside, bath, and a few others.
  • Any signs you can think of! They love that they can communicate. We do animal signs (cat, dog, bird, etc), food signs (I think I regret teaching her the sign for banana), etc..

  • I know DS knows eat, more, milk, and hi/bye, but I also know they do sign language regularly at DC and I just personally don't know the other signs they have been working on to be able to recognize when he's using them at home.
  • More, Eat, Drink, All Done, and Help were the most popular for us.  And both my kids still sign please.

I don't know if you allow your kids to watch any TV but Baby Signing Time is a great set of videos that teaches some basic signs that both of my kids love.  It also helped my DD with her speech because they repeated words over and over again and there were little kids in the video doing the signs.
  • The same 3 words were our first 3 too.  She also does Thank you, help, potty (we are just starting potty training), cat, bear, milk, bird.  She speaks while she signs so a lot of the signs are starting to phase out of favor.

  • "all done" is a big one over here, also: please, down, eat, dog, ball, water, and her favorite foods: cracker, cheese, berry, apple

we've signed "milk" for ages and it never caught on for some reason.  I'd love if she would learn that one, as well as thank you, music, more, and up.  but so far, she has skipped over those.
