Rice substitute.

Do you think quinoa would work? I'm allergic to rice and really want to make some stir fry. Some times I'll get rice with my meal at the hibachi place or rice noodles with pad Thai. But I still get sick from it, though not too bad with really processed rice.

My food allergies are getting much worse, so I'm trying to avoid them. I hate allergies.
Any other ideas to use in place of rice?

  • This may sound weird but it's actually delicious (and healthy). Cauliflower. Chop it up and put it in a food processor until it's about the size of grains of rice, then stir fry like you would rice.

  • @J3nnyb you are officially the person that knows about unusual foods. I think that is now 3 foods that I have never heard of in the last several days.

  • Could you do lo mein noodles instead?  DH isn't a huge fan or rice, so we'll often switch do noodles instead.

I wouldn't use quinoa for stir fry but that's my personal preference.  Have you tried farro?  I give it to DD to change things up instead of brown rice.  It's chewier than rice and I haven't gotten any complaints from her.  I get it from Target from their Simply Balanced brand in micro pouches - so convenient!  Also, I think kamut wheat berries could work as a substitute for rice too.  I haven't tried them yet, so I can't vouch for texture or flavor.
Never heard of Farro or Kamut Wheat Berries. I will have to do some research on these as I love trying new foods!
