Cutting Nails - what a project!

Does anyone have a good way of cutting nails? My son hates it and kicks the whole time! I try to distract him, have my husband hold him, nothing works!

Re: Cutting Nails - what a project!

  • The only thing in the world that works for us is letting her play with the ipad or iphone. I tried just about everything. She would literally scream bloody murder and pull so hard from me until I caved and let her play with the ipad. Now it's a breeze.

  • DD used to be like this. I would cut them when she was napping.

  • I started letting DD think she was doing it. Now she's obsessed with me doing her nails. I have to hide the clippers or she keeps bringing them to me to cut her nails.

With DS I always did it right before bath or bed in the bathroom and sing to him.

  • I do it in the high chair as well. We have a clip-on one that we attach to our kitchen counter. I put him in it and have the ipad on in front of him. I play him videos of himself and he loves watching them! This gives me about 5 minutes of relative peace to cut his nails.

I used to clip his nails while letting him watch tv (the only time we have the tv on when he is awake), but even the tv doesn't hold his attention long enough.

I would so much rather cut DD's nails every week or so than go through the teeth-brushing torture we go through twice a day...

Ugh DS was horrible with teeth! My heart rate increases just thinking about it.

  • Only when DD is sleeping! She screams otherwise!

We let DS watch a show on my Kindle while I do it. He's able to understand when I say "if you want to watch the show, I need to cut your nails" so that helps. He sits pretty still now. I also say "almost done!" when he gets all fidgety.
We do this too.  DS watches the Olaf song from Frozen.  He loves that snowman.
  • TV is the only way I can get him to sit still for nails, and even then I can only get a few done at a time.

  • Oh, yeah, brushing teeth is a huge pain, too.  And as soon as I posted above re nails, I remembered the 8 month period when every diaper change was a wrestling match/scream fest.  And the TORTURE of waiting for DS to climb in and out of his car seat in rain/snow/sleet/polar vortex.

Nails really aren't all that bad.

  • THanks all! Ill try the highchair because his favorite show could be on the ipad, and he still kicks and screams lol
  • After much trial and error (with my now 8 yr old) I've found that a sleeping baby is the only way (for me) to do it safely without stress.

um my son still does this.....when does it END???
Maybe in the last couple months?  DD is almost 20 months.  It was bad until very recently.  Now she'll usually chill and read a book while I change her.
