How long were you 3cm dilated?

So last night I fell down the stairs while carrying my toddler and landed myself in L&D. Five days ago I was 1 cm dilated and 0% effaced. Last night I was 3-3.5 cm and 80% effaced. This is my third baby. I've never been this far dilated without already being in labor. The doctors and nurses were acting like it could be in the next day or two since I've been having around the clock contractions for three days. I just wanted to know how long you were dilated 3cm and almost completely effaced before labor started? I'm almost 37 weeks.

Re: How long were you 3cm dilated?

  • I was 4 cm and 70% for several (like 4) weeks....

  • I was 3-4 cms dilated for 1.5 months w/ my twins. (PTL at 31 weeks, had them at 37w4d)

  • FTM mom here so I have no personal experience. I do have a friend who told me she was 4cm and having irregular contractions for a month and she still had to be induced.

  • Yep, awhile. I am 35 weeks tomorrow and dilated to a 4. Means nothing even though it reminds you of how soon everything is coming. I was at a 2 at 36 weeks with my son and at a 4 with him for weeks 37 and 38. He was born at 38 weeks, 4 days. Many hospitals will admit you when you are at 4 cm if your water breaks or you are having very consistent labor contractions.
  • With DD I was 2-3 cm dilated from my first cervical check at 36 wks until I went into labor at 39+6

  • I've been at 3 cm for more than a week now...
I love my doctor, but today she was like, "It always amazes me how some women can be so dilated for so long!" And I really wanted to point out the obvious - "so maybe it doesn't mean anything!!!"

  • You said the doctors and nurses think it could be in the next day or two, I would assume they are thinking this because of the around the clock contractions, not necessarily the dilation. If you are having round the clock contractions, you most likely will go sooner than later.

  • Those numbers have no indication on when labor will start. My midwife said she had a mama walking into her 40 week appointment at 7cm dilated . It is just less work later. Just keep and eye on those contractions until they become longer and stronger. Also other indication that early labor is present such as... diarrhea, lower back pain, bloody show/mucus plug, extreme energy or lack of energy.

  • Yes they think it will be soon because of the contractions and not so much due to the dilation. I'm just so glad the baby is okay after the bad fall. He didn't move at all for two hours and I was so scared. I guess I should have posted this as a poll. Not really needing all the sarcastic comments right now. :(

This for me. I was .5 cm dialated when labor started (if that even counts). I'd say the contractions are more of a sign that the dilation. GL.

Thank you! My contractions are about 6 min apart now so I'm just trying to take it easy right now and not read too much into it since it could still be a while before real labor starts. I know from my other babies that this isn't the real deal yet.
  • She's AWing her cervix to a bunch of strangers on the internet. And apparently expecting them to give a shit. Good luck with that, OP.

  • I wanted to know in past pregnancies how long others were dilated this long. As in like 4 days, 4 weeks, etc. I don't need anyone to give me "advice". I'm no newbie at this.
  • Ah, so you want to use internet strangers as your personal human google. Just demand information from
people you have spent no time supporting. Even though you have access to health care providers and have done this potentially 2 more times than anyone you are asking. Got it.

  • Well, let's see, since I had my doc stand there with her fingers jammed up my vag for the entire time I was dilated to a 3, I can tell you it was exactly 3 weeks, 4 days, 22 hours, 37 minutes and 14 seconds. Then, I was suddenly a 4! Yay me!

  • I spent 2 weeks at 7cm so my cervix is awesomer than yours. Just sayin'.
