So tonight I have to pack for our weekend trip. Ideally I wold like to only take one bag for the 3 of us. Then a cooler/snacks and stuff for DS. This is the longest he has been in the car. Any tips/tricks/suggestions?
Lots of snacks!! Also, do you know what part of the day you're leaving? We tend to travel in the morning so he either goes back to sleep or is still pretty tired so he kind of just chills & is content with eating breakfast on the go.
We are leaving at 3:30pm its about a 4 hour drive. He is usually in bed at 7:30, but i'm hoping he naps and then stays up a little later...

That sounds like a good plan.
Also, be prepared to make a few stops. Lots of diapers & change of clothes, just in case. If he has certain things he sleeps with, don't forget those. DS has (we call them) his 3 musketeers that he MUST have. If you're staying at a hotel, maybe bring a sound machine. I don't know why but hotels seem to be built so lightly so just in case there's noisy people, it won't interrupt his sleep.
That's a good idea he has a frog that is a sound machine!
We've been lucky that DD usually does good on road trips. We usually try to plan around her nap time, but that doesn't always pan out. Bring lots of snacks and drinks. I know tv is a no no, but if you have a portable dvd player bring his favorite shows...sometimes they can be a lifesaver if you get stuck in traffic. DD always likes to have a few stuffed animals to play with. And I definitely second the idea of a sound machine or lullabies if he listens to those.
Thankfully I borrowed a portable DVD player from a friend. I hope that helps.
Can you leave at 730/would LO sleep in the car? For such a short drive I would wait and have LO sleep the whole way, DD hates the car though so if she isn't sleeping she's crying.
I got back a couple weeks ago from a 12 hour road trip with LO. The portable DVD player was a lifesaver. Things that helped: sitting in the back with him, the DVD player (we brought Disney DVDs with us), lots of snacks, getting out to stretch and let him run around frequently, and books.
As for the hotel I'd recommend bringing his comfort items (we brought Cooper's blanket and his favorite stuffed animal).
He has never been a car sleeper, but I thought he would sleep on this trip. We left at 3:30AM and arrived at 4PM and he slept maybe ten minutes. Aside from that things went pretty well. I'd never leave in the middle of the night again now that I know he'll refuse to sleep even over 12.5 hours.
