Coffee??

Are any of you drinking a cup of coffee each day? I never did when I was pregnant with my daughter...but I just had my 1st cup yesterday (YUM) and contemplating on drinking one today!

Side note: When I'm not pregnant I drank 1 cup of coffee a day.

I feel like I'm doing something wrong and I feel guilty! At the same time, I know it's ok to have 1 a day. I just don't want to harm baby and it's little heart:) :) I'm crazy I know! Lol

  • I didn't really drink coffee when I was pregnant with DS, but I have a 4-year-old this time around. :P One cup of coffee per day is fine!
  • My RE had zero tolerance for the slightest amount of caffeine (no decaf, no chocolate).    My OB said they'd prefer that I didn't have any caffeine, but understand that some people need it.  So at 19 weeks, I compromised the two opinions and started having decaf a few times a week.  And I have chocolate whenever I feel like it. :)

  • I have a cup of coffee per day, and sometimes a cup of half-caff later in the day. I did the same thing when I was pregnant with my son and he turned out fine.

  • I have an iced white chocolate mocha from starbucks twice a week. I've found the espresso content really helps with constipation, plus they're so. freaking. good.

I've had a couple espresso drinks from Starbucks recently. I never think about the caffeine content in chocolate, oops! My weakness is sweet tea, though. I usually drink that without abandon. I'm finally trying to be better for my blood sugars, so I guess I'm making up for the caffeine with Starbucks. :P

    ETA:
FWIW, my mom was surprised when I told her I'm not supposed to have caffeine. She had 4 kids and had no idea. I guess it wasn't a thing 25-30 years ago, but we're all fine. (well, I guess that could be up for debate...)

McDonald's sweet tea is like crack. I might need one now.

These comments are funny! Lol! Seriously, our parents drank coffee, ate deli meats etc...even let us sleep on our stomachs!! I can't believe we're alive ladies! :):)

  • @kitchencolors No, they didn't say I couldn't have any. They gave me the standard recommendation. It's just easier to tell my mom "I'm not supposed to have caffeine" when she offers coffee at 9:00 PM!

  • FFS. I haven't even had a cup yet and this question comes up?  How long have we been pregnant again?

When the overwhelming medical evidence says that 200mg or less of caffeine a day is safe, I go with that.  Coffee, tea, coke (the soda kind), I do it all.  In moderation, meaning about 200mg or less a day.
    ILY.

Also, I've said it before and I'll say it again - I wake up at five for work, so someone will have to tear my coffee out of my dead pregnant hands.

  • Bottoms up! Yes, you can have caffeine. It doesn't really matter how you have it, 200mg or less per day is considered just fine and safe.

I've been drinking half-caff to keep the intake down a bit (we're big coffee drinkers) and we generally have decaf anyway late in the day if we want a cup, so I stick to those. I have coffee every day, sometimes a Coke too, and of course chocolate always.

God, I wish I could even fathom sleeping on my stomach at this point. I REALLY miss sleeping on my stomach. I've been contemplating buying this: https://www.holo-lilo.com/index.html

  • I drink at least 2 cups a day. If not neither myself or unborn child would survive... Seriously though. Drink the damn coffee. My doctor encouraged it when I was hit with the dreaded 2nd tri headaches.
  • I have a horrible coffee aversion while pregnant. It gives me the sads.

  • Yes, I'm absolutely drinking coffee. I am not kidding that I drank about a pot a day before getting pregnant (I work at home, so always drinking coffee), so at least I've cut back. I've been drinking a couple of halfway full cups of regular coffee and then the rest of the day drinking a couple more halfway full cups of half-caff. I fill the cups about halfway full of the coffee and the other half almond milk. I don't know how much it works out to be, but it's a heck of a lot less than I used to drink.

I drank less in the first trimester, and have been drinking a little more lately. I simply cannot keep up with working full-time and a nearly two year old DD without some coffee.

Oh yeah and some chocolate too. Gasp!

  • I switched to the 1/2 caff during the week. On the weekends when DH is home to have coffee with me, I have regular coffee - but only have one cup. Ok.....I have had to 3 before, but normally one. ;)

  • I avoided caffeine during first trimester, but it was mostly because I lost my taste for coffee. After Christmas I ended up with $60 worth of Starbucks gift cards. So I have been drinking much more coffee in the last month or so than I used to. I usually order half-caff, so I guess that makes it a little better?

I also reignited my Diet Pepsi habit in the last few weeks. Not proud of that, but I'm not concerned about the baby. I just wish I had the willpower to choose water when I'm thirsty.

  • I have a cup each morning when I wake up! I ditched the coffee first Tri because I was just a little on the cautious side, however my doctor assured me coffee is fine. I believe you are supposed to limit caffeine intake to around 200mg a day :D

  • I was having 2 cups of coffee in the morning (1 when i get up, 1 when i get to work) but have brought that down to 1 caffeinated when i get up and 1 decaf when i get to work, because i just want to err on the side of caution with regards to pre-term labour. I don't have caffeine after lunch because it affects my sleep. If i have soda, i have non-caffeine soda. The caffeine level in chocolate is pretty low, so i don't really count that.

  • I'm a soda drinker. I drink a can or less a day. It's about 1/4 or less than the 200mg. I feel more guilty about the sugar than the caffeine. But I still drink it! Keeps my headaches away.
  • I have personally been having about a cup a day.. My midwives are super crunchy and prefer that I didn't though.

That One Gal From Alaska :)

  • What is the reason why some midwives or doctors suggest no caffeine at all?? Strange.

  • I haven't been..stopped drinking coffee even before I was pregnant..back when I thought you couldn't have caffeine whilst pregnant. Now, of course, I know that you can, but my body is now used to the copious amounts of water I drink, I guess, and doesn't handle caffeine well AT ALL right now. Even when I drink decaf (I must have the flavored creamer), I think the sugar gets to me. I had a half cup of decaf coffee last weekend and thought my heart was going to break my ribs.

But yes, Mama, if you want a cup each day, have it! And with each cup, remember how jealous I will be that your body can handle it and mine has a spaz attack. :)

  • I was a heavy coffee drinker pre-pregnancy and it was the first thing I lost a taste for when I got pregnant. So sad. I do have the occasional little can of Coke. Sometimes it just makes my stomach feel better.

  • When I am not pregnant I drink ridiculous amounts of coffee. As soon as I got my BFP, I reduced to just one cup in the morning, my doc is fine with that. I try to keep it at that but the reality is that sometimes I will have caffeine in the afternoon as well, like another half cup of coffee or soda.

Amen sister! Pregnant w/a toddler working fulltime is why I just can't go without coffee.
  • Heck yes I'm still drinking coffee. A cup every morning and occasionally in the afternoon or evening if I'm especially sleepy that day.

I used to drink 2 cups a day, then cut back to one cup when we started TTC. Once I got pregnant, I couldn't handle coffee anymore after about 4-5 weeks so I had to stop. I still had Coke when I could manage it. For the last month, maybe, I've been able to go back to my usual morning cup but not the same size as it used to be. I have a Keurig that lets me choose the brew size and for now, it's still set to the smallest one. But that's so much better than no coffee at all! I also supplement with Coke when I need some extra but I do make sure not to hit 200 mg/day.

ETA: My doctor did tell me that I didn't have to give up my morning cup as long as I could handle it.

  • I gave up drinking it regularly while I was trying to conceive, only so I wouldn't be addicted to it. Now, when I really need it (I'm really dragging in the morning, or have a bad headache), the caffeine actually does something for me! You can def have a cup a day and it's totally fine.

I've also noticed that I feel the effect much more now than I did before being pregnant! That's one of the reasons I've stuck to the smallest brew size. I can usually feel the buzz before I even finish the cup. If I don't follow it with a lot of water, mornings get weird.

  • I drink a cup every morning! My first tri i didn't have any. Then second tri hit and i started getting terrible headaches. My OB told me to try caffeine. So i started drinking a cup of coffee in the morning. Now I don't have headaches as long as i drink some caffeine. Days with no caffeine are headache days. SO i either have a cup of coffee in the morning or a coke in the afternoon. So I would say based on that if you want to have a cup of coffee its fine. My OB says less than 200mg per day of caffeine is fine.
