3rd Trimester

scheduled c-section- first time mom

Good Morning All,
I'm scheduled for a c section at 39 weeks for medical reasons. I'm a first time mom and nervous that I may not make it to 39 weeks. Many women have been telling me they went into labor naturally before 39w and it makes me nervous that I won't make it to my scheduled c section.  I'm also a small woman carrying what Dr's believe is a large baby (measuring in the 90th percentile), which makes me wonder if I'll go into labor earlier because of the big baby. I really like my Dr and want him to deliver my baby, especially since it is a major surgery and I'm comfortable with him.  Any advice from other women in here who have had scheduled c sections?  Did you make it to your 39 week date?  Any advice is much appreciated :)

  • I had two scheduled c-sections for medical reasons.

With DD1, I went into labor 6 days before the scheduled surgery, and another doctor from the OB practice, who was on call that day, delivered my baby.  Everything was fine, and there were no complications from the few hours I spent in early labor.

With DD2, I had her on the scheduled day and time, with my OB.  Again, no complications, although they did have some concerns about fluid in her lungs (not uncommon for CS babies) and they had her sleep on an angle on her back and did additional observation immediately after her birth.

Both girls are healthy and thriving.  As PPs have said, there's just no way to know when you'll go or if you'll go early.  With DD1, I had a case of food poisoning that my doc thought brought on labor.  With DD2, I was having serious contractions for the two weeks prior to her birth, but they weren't productive and she was born on schedule at 39w2d.

There's a great c-section board on the Bump, with tons of helpful ladies if you have additional questions.  Good luck to you!

  • Thank you so much!!
  • Only one of my c-sections was scheduled, and I delivered on that day as scheduled with no issues and the doctor I expected.

Also, there is a c-section board here on the bump with alot of useful information, helpful Q&As.
  • My 1st was the same situation, I had a very large baby and had a scheduled c section only 3 days before due date, I was not in labour and she never dropped.  I wouldn't worry everything will happen when it's supposed to, or you will just stroll in and have her when you are scheduled.  Good Luck.

  • My first child was not a scheduled c-section, but I am very petite, having an almost 9lb baby and was induced at 41 weeks.  This child will be a scheduled c-section at 39 weeks and if I go into labor before my surgery date, I will go to the hospital and they will call my doctor and deliver my baby.

My mother had 4 schedule c-sections, of those, I was the only one that she went into labor with and she just went to the hospital and they did it 3 days sooner than planned.

  • Are they doing C-section due to baby's size? I had a emergency c-section due to severe pre-e and it was a great experience. Now I am going to have on again at a little over 39 weeks this time due to issues but I could also go into labor before. If so it will just be another emergency c-section. My son came out fine with no issues and I had none myself. My recovery was pretty much expected. Just don't over do it with walking/driving when you have one within the first 2 weeks or you will bleed and pay for it. Just take it easy after birth. I over did it after because I was on bedrest for so long I was dying to get out and get all necessities I wasn't able to get because of health issues. So going to target the day after I returned from the hospital was a huge nono and walking the dog. Just added to extra bleeding. I promise it wont be a bad experience.
