Question for those with two close in age

I have a question about toys when you have two close in age.  I have two that are 16 months apart.  A girl and a boy.  They have started fighting over toys. Most often the oldest (boy) wanting whatever the youngest has which is typically one of 'his" toys.  So my question is are all of your toys joint toys and whoever has it first it's theirs or are there certain or special toys that you only let one of them have?

Re: Question for those with two close in age

  • I have a 4 yr old DD and 2 yr old DS. Most of their toys are joint toys. However, DD just started staking claim to her dolls and it caused huge problems because DS always wants what DD is playing with. We seemed to have solved this by telling her that toys in the common area of the house can be played with by anyone. Toys in their rooms are theirs. DD keeps her dolls in her room now, for the most part, some days she is willing to share but it is on her terms so she is much happier. She does bring her dolls down during DS's naptime usually and will return them to her room when DS wakes up.

  • All toys are joint toys except their loveys which are hands off.  DD is 3 and has a bitty baby that is only hers.  DS is 17 mos and has a couple stuffed animals that he doesn't share.  Toys that aren't safe for DS are packed away and DD can't get them without me and then can only use them at the table where DS can't reach.

Other than that it's free game.  And they usually want what the other has.  I try not to step in too much.
