Pumping question

For those of you who pump - do you ever have issues draining just one section?  The lower right quadrant on my right side just seems like it won't drain - that one section ends up engorged and often plugged at the end of the day when I have to pump at work all day.  I massage it, I try to turn it in different directions, I've replaced my pump parts, and I hand express what I can after finishing pumping, but it still won't drain like it does when N nurses.  Any other suggestions or thoughts?  I don't deal with this often since I normally work from home and nurse her but when I go into the office I run into this issue.

Re: Pumping question

  • Not a pumper, but maybe warm compress? You can buy those one-time use heating pads.

  • This has happened to me but not with the regularity that you described.

  • Have you looked at your nipple to see if there's a bleb or anything like that?  I get a clog in one area all the time.  I regularly have to use a washcloth to rub my nipple and sometimes take a needle to the area that looks like it's getting a blister.  Sometimes the plug looks like a tiny white dot on the nipple. Not fun!
  • I have the same problem. I get blebs frequently-they look almost like a little spot with a layer of extra skin on it.

My LC told me to apply a warm compress/terry cloth washcloth right before pumping and leave on while pumping. Then when I am finished pumping take washcloth and wipe my nipple  to make sure I get any excess skin off, then hand express to make sure that I have expressed enough from pumping session,  and then apply a little olive oil to my nipple.

If it is a bleb I would not recommend poking it yourself-go to the Dr. That is one area you don't want infected or scarred.
  • Thanks for the suggestions. I'm quite an expert at plugged ducts unfortunately (good memory @CL8badB)! This isn't where I normally get plugged, although it happens there when I pump often. Really, everything clogs me up. Thankfully I don't have to pump often.
