Trying to Get Pregnant

Clear Blue Ovulation Predictor Kit Question

Hello,

My hubby and I are TTC and I'm not sure when I'm ovulating (I have an idea based on my recent cycles, but not positive). I bought the Clear Blue 2 month OPK and just started it on Monday. Since my cycle length varies (average from past 3-4  months is 36 days.. after being messed up because I was coming off BC), I started earlier than the test recommends, just to be safe. the last day of my period was Saturday (the 1st), so I figured why not start testing - what could it hurt?

Monday and Tuesday came up no smiley face - the blank circle- which I was expecting. Honestly, I was expecting the blank circle for at least the entire week. then this morning I tested and it came up the steady smiley face, which would mean I was ovulating today or tomorrow. I'm not sure that's correct, especially because I just stopped my period, and my periods are usually at the end of each month, making my cycles longer). Also, yesterday or the day before I didn't get a flashing smiley to tell me that I'm fertile - and that test is supposed to show you your four fertile days leading to ovulation! So, I'm a bit confused and was wondering if this happened to anyone else? I'm bummed if that stupid smiley face is right, because we missed yesterday and monday ttc. Sunday we DTD, so I'm hoping that the little guys were hanging out today still!

I think I'm still going to test after these next two days when the smiley face goes away - I think you can reset the test and act like it's a new cycle and just continue testing just in case!

Thoughts? Any advice is appreciated!

Re: Clear Blue Ovulation Predictor Kit Question

  • Oh ok. So you think I should continue testing just in case? I woke up my hubby this morning because of it so we could DTD lol. He wasn't happy.. at first. ;-)

  • This is my first month using OPKs but I also used CBEs. I didn't get a flashing smiley at all from testing twice a day starting from CD 10, and then got the solid smiley in the afternoon on CD 13 (Monday). I haven't gotten my CH from FF yet, but I think that based on my temps so far, I definitely O'd yesterday or Monday.

I couldn't tell you why the flashing smiley never showed, other than what PP said regarding a surge but not actually Oing, but just thought I would share that you are not alone in getting a solid smiley right off the bat.

  • I would keep testing since your body is still trying to get back into its groove after you BC. It couldn't hurt to HIO but like the other ladies said, just be aware you may have more surges. You might want to give the temping a shot, it'll give you a lot of info about what is going on too. Good luck!

Trying to have baby #1 since April 2013

DH SA March,May 2014 - Low motility and shape issues. On vitamins per RE to help

Me testing April 3, 2014 - FSH and LH good, HSG showed blocked right tube

April 29, 2014 - First RE appt., right tube needs to be removed and possibly left also if

it's bad too. RE suggests going straight to IVF

June 4, 2014 - LAP/HSC and unexpected endo. removed but tubes got to stay!

June 13, 2014 - Post-Op appointment. We decide where to go next since main issue

is MFI influenced. Trying naturally until decision... Repeat SA  in September. Aiming for IUI #1 November 2014.

  • I have used these for several cycles and I have always had blinky then solid. This month I had EWCM early, so I tested cd11 and had empty circle, then got solid circle cd12. I'm certain I'm Oing and will conform with temps. All other signs are pointing to it as we'll. I think it can happen. Good thing you HIO anyways. Good luck!

  • thanks everyone for your quick responses! That makes me feel better- I was shocked when I saw that happy face!

  • Thank you! I did read that somewhere so thank you for confirming, so I guess I'll have to wait until Friday to start a "new cycle" on the kit.

Definitely also temp. I use two forms of OPK and never have gotten a positive but did get a confirmed O with temping. I use the digital and don't get smileys. I just like to waste things by continuing to pee on them.
LOL! I feel like I do the same thing. Keep spending money on things to pee on just to come up negative or confused!! Good luck :-)

Definitely keep testing.  You can have several surges in one cycle with only the last one leading to ovulation.

I would also recommend basal body temping - so much clearer than a predictor kit.  The predictor kit is just ...predicting.  Basal body temping is confirming.  I like confirming.
Is it too late to start temping now? I read somewhere that you should temp on your first day of your period. Also, do you get a regular thermometer or do you have to have a special one?

Sorry for all the questions - I don't know anything about temping!

  • I've heard of getting a peak reading without a high "blinky smiley" reading before it.  I've had the other experience with it-last cycle I had 11 days of high, and then one day of peak solid smiley, but no temp shift.  I've had 3 days of blinky smiley so far this cycle with no solid yet.  Hopefully the tests work better for you.  I think my body is just screwy.

  • If you've gotten the smiley face on the CB, you can't use that holder again. I've ran into this issue and read info on their website. You have to buy a new holder because the CB holder saves that reading and you'll continue to get the same result.

Because of this, I switched to the wondfo ovulation tests. You can get 50 of them on amazon pretty inexpensive. The thing I like about the wondfo is you can see the line getting darker so you can tell when you're about to O.

Huh?? I've definitely continued to use the same holder after a positive and gotten a negative.
Those things are a PITA. I kept getting a smiley face, so I called CB, and they were the ones who told me that and pointed me to their website where it suggests what I mentioned. But I'm happy it worked for you!!

The way I understand it, the CB Advanced stores the data and won't give you another Smile. The CB regular digital does not. I got 2 phases of Smiles on CB Digital in the same cycle. The first was a "gear up to O" and never happened. The second phase was accurate.

Oh. Then yeah. I don't know anything about that.
Oh lord. now I have no idea. I bought the two month supply one, so I'll be livid if I can't use the same holder - I have ALL of these test sticks! I thought I read on the instructions that came with it that you can reset it if you have extra test strips, but maybe i'll have to re-read. I *THINK* this is the one I got :https://www.walmart.com/ip/23990924?wmlspartner=wlpa&selectedSellerId=3&adid=22222222227017704910&wl0=&wl1=g&wl2=c&wl3=35432812956&wl4=&wl5=pla&wl6=50614388556&veh=sem

Ok so this is what I pulled from online It is not possible to continue testing once Peak Fertility is displayed. Peak Fertility symbol will show on the day it is first detected and the day after. Therefore it will remain on the display for 48 hours after it is first detected and indicates that you are at your most fertile. You cannot perform another test while there is a result on the display. After Peak Fertility is displayed you must stop testing for this cycle. You can save any remaining test sticks for use in a future cycle if required but you must use the same Holder for a cycle of testing (do not change Holders part way through a cycle of use). Then, another question says what does it mean if it goes from low to peak.. They respond with : This product tracks the changes in estrogen and luteinising hormone (LH) throughout the menstrual cycle. If the necessary changes in estrogen are detected the Holder will display High Fertility and if the necessary changes in LH are detected the Holder will display Peak Fertility. If the hormone changes naturally occur close together it is possible that High Fertility may not be displayed and that the Holder will change from Low Fertility to Peak Fertility without displaying High Fertility. We would like to reassure you that this does not mean that your product is faulty and that you have still detected your two most fertile days to try to conceive. However if tests are missed or not performed correctly (i.e. mis-sampled, mis-timed or a weak concentration of urine is used) then your High Fertility results can also be affected. So, tomorrow I'm going to try to insert a new stick and see what happens. Then I'm going to call the help line. I'm pretty sure I didn't o - it' seems too soon after I had my period to have o'ed already, (I just finished my period on Saturday!) and I haven't had barely any cm... Especially not egg white cm! I just started temping this morning so it's not like I can really use that as a sign if I o'ed or not. I have to say, I'll be pretty ticked off if I spent all this money on a test that isn't going to be accurate or let me test more this cycle because it just stored I had an LH Surge that didn't mean anything
  • I also use this OPK and it sounds like you may have started too early. After the two days of solid smiles I would suggest beginning your "testing cycle" again.

On a side note my digtal stick stopped working after my third time using it and I was so bummed! Make sure you follow the directions the best you can. They sent me a replacement and extra testing strips which made me feel better but i lost out on that month for using the tester.

Thank you! I just spoke to Clear blue and she said that you can reset the test. That after you see the smiley the test resets itself. I tried this morning and it did come up as a new cycle and there was no smiley. She didn't recommend keep testing though, and I think it's because they go by if you get a steady smiley you must be ovulating . I asked about the LH surge but no actual o and she stuck by her product saying that my first phase of my cycle must just be really short . I guess that can happen because of the birth control but I'm not exactly buying it. So I'm just going to keep testing and temping and hio and hope for the best !
