Multiples

Recommend your bottle warmer...

Our b/b twins are 9wks old and we have officially hit the "I want food and I want it right now" stage which has resulted in dual screaming sessions quite often while I am home alone during the day. As an EP mom, I need to invest in a good bottle warmer. The one we have now is not cutting it as far as speed goes. What brand/type has worked for other MoMs? Ready?...go....

Re: Recommend your bottle warmer...

  • My twins aren't here yet but with DD we used an Avent warmer and I seem to remember it being rather quick to heat a bottle.

  • Ive heard a crock pot w. warm water for all day use is great for multiples since you can warm more than one at once. Was gonna try that when the boys come along :)

    I like this ^^ idea.

We just used warm water which we heated in the microwave for a minute or two.  That seemed to take the longest.  But we had our girls on a pretty strict schedule, so I just started the warming process about 10-15 minutes before the scheduled time so it would be ready.

Have you tried to see if they'll take it cold?  Some do.  Mine would, but I still had to take off the chill so it was cool, not cold.  Now they are on room temp formula, which is a wonderful thing :)

Good for you or pumping so long.  I stopped about 8-9 weeks.  My supply just couldn't keep up, then it tanked.

This is our plan too! I have a small 1 qt crock pot that should work perfectly for bottles.

Why don't you purchase a bullet flask thermo from walmart or ikea? They work great when it comes to keeping the water warm for up to 12 hours. My son is more of a "I want food and I want it right now" and my daughter is patient. I personally feel it's waste of money in purchasing a bottle warmer because we bought one and it took almost 2 minutes for the bottle to get warm. I feel the bullet flask is way better than that, and either way he cried/cries until the bottle was/is in his mouth. :)

Secondly, I feel it's a good idea to get your kids used to room temperature or cool water. You never know if you're out and run out of warm water... My pediatrician strictly suggested to make them used to everything and not get them habituated to one thing. It makes sense as well, doesn't it? And your babies are still young. You can start from now if you feel that would be fine... ;) Believe me my twins take their bottle if it's warm, or at room temperature or directly from the fridge. It doesn't matter to them.

I've attached a picture of what bullet flask thermo looks like. HTH.
  • Our first daughter would only take bottles at room temperature. I've felt your pain. Last time, we ran hot water into a bowl and put the bottle in.... took forever with the fussy kid. We're looking into bottle warmers for thus time around. Or, to be multipurpose, I've heard that some wine chillers can be used as bottle warmers... ;-)
  • Thanks for all the input ladies!
I would love the boys to take the milk at room temp, however I think that the NICU kind of "spoiled" them, for lack of better terms. The industrial style warmer that they used got the milk to the perfect temp every time and now they seem to be very particular about it being the same way. Ugh.
  • We used the older version of this. We kept a small fridge in their room which helped a lot. We could do diapers while warming the bottles. It only does one at a time, but we took shifts and (luckily, I guess) rarely needed to feed both at the very same minute. Even then, I occasionally put up with a bit of hysteria, so they could have the one-on-one attention.

You could try to start warming the bottles less and  less over time, so eventually they will take it room temp.  It'll make your life easier, and the process will be shorter :)

  • My water gets hot very quickly so I ran it for 20-30 seconds, put the bottles in the pink bucket they gave us in the hospital, and by the time I walked upstairs with it, the bottles were warm. You can try adjusting the temperature on your water heater to make your hot water even hotter. I had so much stuff on my counters from the twins that I was happy to not have another gadget to plug in. I definitely would have bought the Baby Brezza if it was available though! No need to warm bottles when you have that thing!

  • We have the Dr. Browns bottle warmer. We loved it with DD1, but we didn't get it until she was older (when we switched to formula at 7 months). So she was a bit more patient for her bottle.

We are using it for the twins but it takes about 3 minutes for the first bottle and a little less for the 2nd. Most of the time they are screaming while waiting for it to warm (I EP so the breastmilk is usually cold from the fridge).

I need to find a better solution.
