Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Sleep help!

My baby is 5 months old we put her down to sleep in her own bed awake and she will go to sleep but wakes many times during the night looking for her paci. We have been giving it to her and she goes right back to sleep. This trend has begun to get old as mom and dad need sleep too! Most of the time her eyes aren't even open she is just fussing. If we don't respond and give it to her it becomes all out crying and she is inconsolable and wide awake! ( not ideal at 2am) should we let her "cry it out" or continue to give her the paci to prevent melt down?? Suggestions Please!

Get up and give her the pacifier if that's why she's waking up. I never support CIO, but in this case I'm especially confused as to why you'd think about doing that since you said that she becomes inconsolable if you don't respond to her. I don't think you'd sleep any better with a screaming baby vs. one who can be quickly soothed by replacing the pacifier.

    This.

  • I don't know if CIO is necessary in this case. Just wait it out, soon she will be able to find it on her own. Maybe stick a bunch in the crib with her. At least that's what happened with ours, she can find it herself and she is almost 6 months. IF you do CIO please read a book or visit troublesometots.com. There are a lot of dos and don'ts that people aren't aware of.

  • 2 options: wait until she is able to get the pacifier herself (if you really want to keep it)
or just get rid of it. It takes about 3-5 hard nights but then she will forget about it. GL
  • This is probably just a phase. May last a while but not forever. Just give her the pacifier and soon enough she'll be able to look for it on her own.  At least she's going back to sleep right after

DD also likes her pacifier at night but I've found that when she keeps waking up and looking for it, it generally means she is hungry. I will get up and replace it about three times and if she is still fussing I will go ahead and feed her (even if she just ate an hour or two ago) and then she will fall into a deep sleep and sleep for hours. Just an idea.

    Yup this

This exactly... We just went through the same thing. I did the same dance as you and figured lout that if I woke up with him the first time and fed him, he actually slept wayyyy longer... Smacks forehead. Took me about a month of getting up every other hour to figure that out. ;) Also, we started weaning the paci for MOTN feedings (when he was sleepiest), and then moved into naps. Now he takes one occasionally but not every time he falls asleep.
  • I have a similar issue with my LO. I'm not sure he's hungry, but when he wakes up, I nurse him, and he falls asleep within minutes. He's also teething, so that may be a factor. I'd try to wait it out. I don't support CIO either. I think it should get better.
