I feel like there is an over emphasis on teachers incorporating technology in the classroom. Not everything needs to be technology driven, and kids don't need to be handling it for every single lesson for effective teaching to happen.

Plus, the cost for getting that technology and training can be rather high. And by the time a piece of technology is incorporated district wide, it's probably already obsolete. Like smart boards. DH's district never even finished getting them into every classroom, and they're already obsolete because of iPads.

You are my new best friend. Our supe was hired on the basis of taking us to 1-to-1, along with a lot of other BS promises he has yet to keep. I feel like our school right now is in shambles, and all he wants anyone to see is our shiny new iPads and AppleTVs, half of which don't work with no plans of fixing them. But all he wants to tell people (and literally all people can see from the outside) is, "Look at our new technology!" when in reality our school is complete BS right now.

Ugh.... Don't get me started on admins.... There are the ones with no backbone to stand up to parents or students, there are the ones that are clueless, and the ones with their own agendas.

I'm not in the schools ATM, but I teach music. So getting anything across to admin, esp the ones that don't get what we do, can be so frustrating. And then trying to essentially legitimize what you do, and the pedagogy you use..... Ugh. And then trying to justify it all during evaluations, when they have no freaking clue to begin with. Not to mention standards and "evidence" that's a waste of time, busywork, and are just outright dumb.

There are a lot of things I don't miss about teaching, and a lot of things I do like about just giving private lessons. But we'll see if I go back in the schools. I know eventually, our bottom line financially would be better if I went back to work. At this point, I don't even know ifit's worth it.

I'll try to end my rant now.

I have had nothing, but good experiences with all 3 of my c-sections. To those that ask if I feel like I "missed out" I laugh. I don't think of 30+ hours of labor as "missing out".
I was in labor for only 2-3 hours before it was decided I needed an emergency C-section.  I'm cool with never experiencing that again.
I kind of actually like labor.  I mean the pain's not fun, but I like all the anticipation of birth. And the wondering when baby will be born.  Of course I might feel differently if I'd had complications or if G's labor had been longer than 4 hours.  I guess it's all in your perspective.
aww, me too :)  I'm all about your mentality really helping.  Granted, I did not have complications, but I loved my labor and M's birth.  Fingers crossed that any future babies follow suit :)

@Mapleme, sound like your H already has his own style, but in case you're interested, I bake mine on a pizza stone.  I preheat it at 550 for at least 45 minutes to an hour before making the pizza.  Then I stretch the dough by hand as thin as it will go and top it on a pizza peel.  I bake at 550 for 3 min and then turn the broiler on high and broil for 3-4 min. It gets crusty and charred and soooooo good :)
That sounds delicious. Yeah, pizza is one of DHs "things." There are things that he does in making pizza that I totally want to "correct" him on (like he refuses to preheat the pizza stone in the oven), but I like how it comes out and I don't want to mess with the master  :P
I feel like I must have worked for the same superintendent! He cut spending in really needed areas (like teaching units, special education assistants), would basically kick us out of the buildings on evenings and weekends to save money on electricity, but then funneled all this money into buying laptops and iPads for the students. Our building was literally falling down around our ears, but at least the kids had access to technology so they could skirt firewalls and access chat sites and porn when they wanted. 8-| (I will admit that I always cracked up when I'd sit down at a lab computer and see that all the last google searches included boobs.)

  • 1. c sections scare me more than labor, but like PP said, that is just my perspective because while my labor was long it was not painful.

    2. I make pizza dough in the food processor takes 5 minutes + rise time.

    3. My UO is that i really don't mind going to the dentist. I have really bad teeth, so I go regularly, especially when I was a kid. There was a time when I was there about once a month. I guess I got used to it, so now I find it relaxing. Last time I was there I almost fell asleep while they were drilling. I thought about becoming a dentist for a while.

  • BTW, @Mapleme, I stalked you and discovered that you make hot sauce with Heady Topper? Whaaaaaaat???!??? I told DH about it and he immediately started drooling.  I might have to order some for his birthday :) It sounds awesome.
  • 1. I liked my C/S too. I would love to have a regular birth, but it seems that might not be in the books for me. At this point if I wanted a VBAC I would be having the baby at home or at UW.

    2. Homemade bread and pizza is awesome. I make it all the time.

I rarely shave as it makes my skin burn/hurt. I do make regular trips to the waxer though.

    Also, Brazilians are awesome.

  • I am petrified of surgery of any kind, so a CS sounds like my worst nightmare. I occasionally have this weird issue with my thumb that when a doctor said he may have to make an incision to check things out I had a legit panic attack in the room, and he was only talking about a hypothetical step after we got results from testing. Omg even just writing the word incision makes me tense up. I can't imagine if they told me I needed a CS, I would most definitely have to be put under general anesthesia, which thinking about makes me more panicky about ever getting a CS, and the cycle continues.

    It all revolves around you.
  • We knew going in that I had a higher chance of getting a c-section because of high I was carrying. I really love my dr though. She kept smiling and being positive, event hough you knew she may be slightly lying to you. We did try for a vaginal delivery and it didn't work.

My dr. was amazing though and super up beat and positive so in hindsight it seems like my c-section was nothing. She also did a newer method where she glued the incision and the recovery time wasn't that bad.

That being said, if I went through it again I would have to have my dr. My friend's dr.s suck and my sister just found out they did a test on her w/o her permission that insurance doesn't cover. OH and it's a $4000 test... Her dr. apparently didn't say anything about it not being covered...

I was so freaking scared too. I hated the though of an epi and a C/S. When they called it I had a panic attack. They load you up on all sorts of shit that makes you calm and it wasn't that bad. My second one I had a panic attack and started crying as they were doing the drugs and such, but I was more aware and awake during that one. I hadn't been induced for 30+ hours before it though. It was not a huge deal. I hear stories of women who've had it naturally have broken ribs, 3rd and 4th degree tears, ect. That shit scares me more now than getting a freaking section.

  • The optional testing for a gene linked to cystic fibrosis would have cost me several thousand. I didn't see the point when already pregnant to find out I might pass a gene to my child that might cause a disease no one in my family had.

The point is that many people are carriers, but don't know it. If your a carrier and your SO is a carrier then you have a 1 in 4 chance of a baby with CF. It's really common for people to be carriers (like 1 in 25 for caucasians). I'm a carrier. So if SO is a carrier as well then we'd have a high chance of having a CF baby.

  • Ugh. Reading these posts makes me remember how hard my labor and delivery were. I was one push away from a c-section, according to my OB. At that point, I was so exhausted and in so much pain, I didn't care if they had to cut me open or what. I am hoping that the next go around is better.

  • It was the cystic fibrosis test that they did on my sis.

My dr. was great. any test not usually covered by insurance, we talked about first. Even some of the genetic ones that would have been covered, we talked about first. If I thought I would terminate due to a certain condition, it was worth it to do the test. But we looked at my family history and what the risks would be for the various tests. I opted out of a few because I didn't want to stress about it, to find out nothing was wrong. Even if something was wrong, all I would have done was stress out more during the pregnancy. But like I said, she took to the time to talk to me about the different tests, and looked at my family history.

I understand about being carriers, but think it would be helpful to test for prior to pregnancy rather than during pregnancy. Especially considering that before we even started TTC I had discussed risk factors for a hereditary disease my husband has. The point is that many people are carriers, but don't know it. If your a carrier and your SO is a carrier then you have a 1 in 4 chance of a baby with CF. It's really common for people to be carriers (like 1 in 25 for caucasians). I'm a carrier. I agree SAK. If we have another baby I will probably opt for a RCS at the hospital I had Cade at. I had a wonderful and very natural experience there. I think besides pushing a baby out of my vag the only thing that I didn't get out of my birth plan was delayed cord clamping. Cade was put on me directly after birth, then wrapped up and SO held him while they put me back together, we stayed together the whole time from start to finish, I got latched right away, I got skin to skin right away, and I got to see the LC right away. With my DD they had me in recovery while DD was in the nursery for 12 hours. I just loved my experience with Cade and was very happy with it. I had minimal pain and left exactly 2 days later.

  • I'm also in the cs are no big deal camp.  I tried for a vbac with #2 and #3, but it never happened.  They told me 3 strikes and I'm out, so this one will definitely be a rcs without question.  Is it sad to say i'm actually a little relieved to pick a date and not have to go through contractions?

I asked for them to take the curtain down for the second and third one, but they wouldn't.  Every time they let me do more in the OR than they did the previous time though, so I'm hoping by this 4th one they'll take the dang curtain down and let me watch.  My husband thinks I'm crazy, but I figure if I end up not wanted to see it I'll just turn my head and chat with him or the anesthesiologist like usual.  He's also passed out two of the 3 times and had to be removed from the room, though, so I just think he's a wuss ;)

I never feel like I've missed out on anything, but some of those natural parenting sites are kind of offensive and imply I didn't have a "real birth" because I've had csections.  Really?  Because I ended up with a very real baby at the end of each experience each time.
If they won't take the curtain down maybe the anesthesiologist or your hubby can hold up a mirror. I got to see all three c-sections that way.

  • My birth was much easier than I thought it would be (and told my mom so in the delivery room). I'm kinda famous at the OB practice for that one...

I think the medfree/epidural/c-section part of the mommy wars is useless. How a birth happens should be based on what the mother wants and what her doctor/midwife feels is in the best interest of mother and child. I do wish all women received better information/education on all types of births to alleviate fear. You often don't know what will happen until it happens.

  • I agree that technology does not automatically mean great teaching. I feel like administrators tend to push technology because it looks good on paper, but in practice it's not always productive. When I take my kids to the lab I feel like I spend half of my time getting them off random websites. Some days teaching feels like trying to herd squirrels, and on those days I don't need anymore distractions. It has it's place, but it's not some magical solution.

I don't get why anyone would ever think having a csection means you didn't give birth. You still had a baby. When I went into labor, my friend (who is an obgyn) told me there is no wrong way to have a baby. Everyone's goal is just to get the baby out safely. I think that's good to remember.

My UO is I'm fine with the snow since it means snow days home with DS. Don't get me wrong, I am beyond ready for warm weather, but that won't likely happen in February in ohio even if the snow stops. I also realize this makes me a selfish asshat because I would hate it if I had to actually drive in it, but I am enjoying my extra snuggle time with my boy. :)

  • What bothers me most about some natural birth advocates is the anti-hospital, OBs-are-the- devil attitude encountered in some places. I'm happy with my OB assisted, in-hospital natural birth. I'm also glad I was in the right place with someone qualified for any type of intervention if it had been needed.

I started at a birthing center and they didn't have this attitude. And I was thankful that they worked closely with an OB who advised them and delivered my baby at the hospital.

We all became mommys regardless of how baby got here.  I look at it just like I do CD'ing, BF'ing, co-sleeping, baby wearing.  They're decisions the parents make based on what's best for baby & family.  It's no one else's damn business.  And it's definitely not right for someone to judge another's decision.
I agree.  I even have a very very very close friend who has told me I'll never really know the pain of childbirth.  Yeah?  Tell that to the scar on my stomach.

ETA:  I just don't get why everything has to be a competitition

This always bothers me. Technically even though I gave birth vaginally both times I have never felt the "pain of birth" due to having an epidural. But both times I felt every contraction. To each their own.

  • The OR at my hospital has mirrored ceilings. I remember my sisters friend telling us about how after laboring for a long time she was kind of out of it from exhaustion/meds and was watching them operate on her for a while before realizing what she was watching. Then she suddenly realized and shouted, 'Oh my god is that what my insides look like!' Lol.
I know this probably says terrible things about the state of my brain, but my first thought after reading this was to wonder what kinds of kinky things the doctors and nurses must be getting up to in those rooms. I think I've seen way too much GA.

  • I feel like I should confess that I did so love my SmartBoard when I was teaching. I was the only SpEd teacher that had one for a long time, and I got it bc I went to the training sessions on my own time when a lot of others skipped it or grumbled about wasting their personal time. I felt like I earned that puppy, and my kids loved it. I'm pretty sure I will be completely tech-stupid by the time I get back in the classroom after 4 years off.
