One & Done: Only child

Snow Day!

We have our first snow day!  I was joking earlier that it's so anti climactic now.  DD goes to the same district I did when I was in school.. and it starts with an "S". Back before smart phone and texts, we would have to flip on the news and seriously wait like 30 minutes for ALLLL the districts to pass to get to the S's. And it would always tick me off when I walked out, turned on the news and we had just passed the S's and so I had to wait a whole cycle..  but it was so exciting to see it flash on the bottom of the screen. OR we would use actual radios and listen to them actually announce them one by one.  Those were the days.

Now I wake up to a 4:30am text that says "closed". While 100% easier, it's like... not as exciting as when I was a kid.

Nonetheless :P First snow day, yay!

Re: Snow Day!

  • Yeah, so many have used up their days.  I have a friend who's DD has used up 13 days! They live in the midwest and closed over 5 days alone just for temps that were hovering around -40. That's over a week of school, yikes!  I have no idea how they'll make up all those days.  I think schools need to give more snow days or something. We get just 3 here, and that's NOT a lot.

But this was just our first, which is rare for February. So my DD is super excited :)

  • I was just thinking about how easy kids have it these days. I was in a W district. There was nothing worse than when the news would go to commercial in the Ps and we would have to wait through commercials and let the ticker start all over.
It's changed to a rain mix. I may have to go out before the snow weighs a ton.

Snow day for us too! DH's work closed yesterday & my boss just texted me. YAY! I like snow so much better when I can just watch it from my couch. :) Speaking of back when we were in school, I lived in a town that began with A & DH in a B town. Hopefully we move before DD starts school as right now we are in a W!!
You'll probably get text alerts on your phone, so it won't matter ;)
Our local news (all 3 of them) even have a school closing text service you can sign up for. So does our school.  And they have give calls now (an automated service).  So the W won't matter lol

  • We get text alerts for ds's daycare. My district has an alert system for notifications about delays and cancelations. It doesn't bring the same joy as seeing the news ticker, but seeing the number on my caller ID makes me smile.

    Times sure are changing.
I remember when I would flip on the radio and the DJ had to READ the closings, haha! Yikes.

  • OMG. Today should've been a snow day for us. We got way worse weather than was predicted and it was honestly worse today than it was for all the other times we already had snow days! People that live under 10 miles away from work are taking close to 2 hours to get in and no one has even touched campus with a plow so it's almost impossible to walk. Add in the terrible blowing snow and it's a complete picture of misery.

  • I was hoping DH wouldn't have to go in to work but nope, he actually said the roads weren't too bad. Womp womp
Same, was hoping H wouldn't have to go in.  He did get a delay by 1.5 hours, though.
Unfortunately, he will be BUSY today.  He works at a major car insurance company. My guess is he will get many, many calls today with accidents.

  • My mom is keeping DS until 11. Then my dad has a doctors appt so I will have to take off early and go get him. The roads are still bad here and it is still trying to snow...
  • We managed to get the snow cleared off just as it switched to the heavy ice/rain mix. Dh and ds are making pizza while I get school work done. Happy snow day! Stay safe and warm!
