Irrationally pissed off - vent

Last night my daughter skyped with her grandfather (my FIL) and today FIL calls my hubs to tell him that he thinks she needs to go to speech therapy!  WTF!  He said he couldn't understand anything she said (to be a little fair to him she talks really fast when excited and if you aren't used to it then I guess it could be harder to pick out each word).  However, I was there for part of the skype time and she was talking very clearly for most of it, phrases I know other people can understand and it's not just me understanding them because I'm with her all the time.

He is getting married and his new wife has a grandson in speech therapy and he said that my DD is the same as him (this kid isn't even 2 yet) and then he compared her to her granddaughter (who is 4) and said that she talks so much better than my DD.  Um...hello, she is more than a year older, of course you can understand her better.

When the hubs defended our daughter he said "Well, I guess it's because her granddaughter is so much more advanced than your DD."  I am so glad I didn't hear this conversation, I would have blown up.

When we go places (stores, restaurants, playdates, etc.) people understand 90% of what she is saying to them, people she has never talked to before.  I am not concerned about her speech in anyway, just really hurt and pissed that he would suggest she needs therapy and be comparing her to a child who is much older than her.

Sorry if none of this made sense, just needed to vent a little.  Oh, FIL lives 4 hours away and hasn't seen her in person since Christmas.

I am not judging anybody or any child who does need speech therapy.  If my child needed it I would give it to her in a heartbeat.  I believe in it's benefits and I've seen them work.  DD friend is in speech therapy (in fact she has gone to a few sessions to be another child to talk to - the speech therapist had nothing but good things to say about DD) - speech therapy has helped her friend greatly.

  • Yes, I would be pissed too, but honestly his points, as you indicated, are not valid. ILs suck! I say ignore him.

  • meh. My kid is extremely verbal, but she's hard to understand on the phone or on skype. I wouldn't worry about it.
  • Some people are just ignorant. My friend had her father in law tell her that her 3 year old had problems because she didn't color inside the lines.

  • I wouldn't worry either.  My kid is extremely verbal but even *I* have trouble understanding him on the phone.

  • :/  DS1 is working with our local EI program, and we do regular assessments for his development on all levels.  At that age, they're concerned with the number of words your child knows, and how many words they string together into a sentence.  Pronunciation doesn't enter into it.  My son pronounces his "r"s like "w"s and they say that's not considered a problem until age 7.  So, don't worry about it.
