NWMR - travelling with a stroller

Do you think its a bad idea to take my UppaBaby Vista with me on a plane? We are going to Aruba and I really want t he durable stroller for the beach (we go every year so I know what I am looking at as far as needs) but I am concerned the stroller will get crushed. I plan to take it all the way to the gate with me and have them check it there, but not sure if thats a bad idea. I dont think a cheap umbrella stroller would do the trick. I need something DS will be ok napping in on the beach...

Re: NWMR - travelling with a stroller

  • I've gate checked stollers before and haven't had any issues.  I'm not familiar with the UppaBaby Vista, but my Chicco (where the infant base can click on top, or the kid can sit up with a tray) went through just fine.  And I must say I'm jealous of an Aruba vacation.

i am literally counting the minutes.
  • I took our Uppa on vacation. But I gate checked it in a stroller bag just in case. https://www.amazon.com/UPPAbaby-Vista-Travelsafe-Travelbag-Black/dp/B004IYNG8C/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1391543709&sr=8-1&keywords=uppababy+vista+stroller+bag
I think I read somewhere that some airlines will cover damage if it's in a bag, but won't if it's not. That's one reason I went with a bag

awesome thanks. i will look at the bag. does it fold up or its big like that for carrying through the airport?

  • Check out Uppababy's Travelsafe program. https://uppababy.com/accessories/vista/travel-bag/

Its amazing.  Our airline broke our stroller while in the bag but because I had done their travel program, Uppababy replaced it for free.  Very VERY worth it.

  • Also, I like having my full featured stroller on vacation.  I would definitely bring it, if just for the canopy coverage alone!

  • It's really a toss up whether your stroller will get damaged by the baggage handlers.  We've traveled a few times with no incidents but the last time we gate checked the stroller with Spirit they completely broke off the bumper bar of our joovy double stroller.  The part was not replaceable.  Another couple's stroller was damaged on that flight too.

We made a claim immediately with spirit and after being denied twice because we didn't' have the "original receipt of purchase", they finally reimbursed us in full.  It's a PITA to file a claim w/the airlines.

I think it's definitely a big risk that your stroller will be damaged when you travel, but it's a risk you either take or don't.

Like some of the other posters, We took ours with the vista stroller bag. If anything happens while it's in the bag, uppababy will replace the stroller. We put it in checked luggage for free, but you can gate check it too.

  • We have a Vista, and we've gate checked it on 10 or so flights. No issues with any damage to the stroller, although one time when it was raining the stroller got a bit wet and we couldn't use it in the airport. You should be fine, enjoy your trip!
  • I've done several plane rides with strollers and car seats. Definitely gate check and put them in bags. You'll be sure they're on the plane with you, have them to help you get through the airport, and the bags and placement will help keep them safe. Be prepared for a little more time through security - unloading and folding the stroller to go through xray can be a PITA.

  • Our stroller has been gate-checked at least 20 times. (Our flights are never direct.) The cup holder broke off pretty quickly but there's never been any other damage.

we have always taken our BOB on vacation with us. We actually upgraded to the bigger wheels bc we knew it would spend a lot of time on the beach. Every holiday someone says to us that is our home stroller and but we use this as our travel stroller....as they are struggling with some cheap umbrella stroller to get through the sand and we stroll right on by!

I love that the kids can nap in it, its easy on the beach and I wouldn't do an airport without the kids strapped in.
We have never had an issue with the gate check.

  • That bags looks awesome, going to buy it tonight for our ten day trip to Florida in April.

We have 3 strollers and the Vista is my favorite by far, love how big the basket is underneath

    bought the bag...thanks guys!
  • We learned the hard way to get a bag for gate checked strollers after the airline completely broke our Orbit and then refused to do anything about it.  They said if it had been in a bag (any bag, even a duffel), they would be responsible for it, but since it wasn't in a bag, we were out of luck.  :(

Yay!  Make sure you register it and follow their procedures on that.  Uppababy has such wonderful customer service that I bet it would be fine without it but you mind as well cover yourself completely.
