Pumping question

If I'm able to pump enough in one session to equal my daughter's intake for two missed feedings, do I still need to pump a second time? It is very hard to find time to pump a second time at work, so I'm hoping this might be ok, but concerned it could make my supply dip. Thanks for any advice.

You should pump every 3-4 hours. Don't go longer than 5 hours without pumping or it can impact your supply. If you make extra, stick it in the freezer.

Edit: pump or nurse every 3-4 hours. So if you nurse at 7AM, then pump no later than 11AM, then pump again at 3PM, then nurse by 7PM, etc.

  • It's challenging because it's a briefer period, but just enough time for her to need 2 bottles. For instance, today I fed her at 6:30am and 10am, then she had a bottle at 1pm and 4pm, then I was home at 5:30pm and she wanted to eat again at 6pm and she will eat one more time before bed. While at work, I pumped at 2pm, which is only going 4 hours in between feedings/pumpings and I pumped enough milk for her to have 2 bottles tomorrow.

  • I always just made sure my daily total met her needs (however the nanny divided up the bottles), but I did always pump twice at work. Usually I got a small surplus, which ended up getting frozen, and that was nice when I got pregnant again and my supply dipped.
