Moving

Hi all,
I tend to be a lurker but do post sometimes. But I am hoping you may have some advice.

I am moving from New England to Colorado. For me this is a huge move. Thankfully my parents have offered to give us a hand moving everything.
I was wondering if you have any advice for that long of a move (will be 31weeks). We are driving back and plan on taking 4 days.

Thanks

Eta:post too soon

Re: Moving

  • Welcome. We just finished up moving from California to Florida a couple of weeks ago. It was a long move! Just take it easy and definitely use the help offered! Overall, it wasn't much harder than our previous moves. I just had to pee a lot on the drive and sit down more during unpacking :)

  • Thanks. I figure we will take some extra pee stops. With three dogs we have to stop every few hours anyway. Just wanted to hear others have survived :)
  • We moved from Southern CA to Colorado in August. I wasn't pregnant at the time, but we drove with two cats and towing my husband's 4x4 rig. We just took it easy and stopped when we needed to. We got a hotel about half way there for the night, up early the next morning and kept on trucking. I would imagine you would need to stop a bit more to use the restroom and stretch your legs. I'm in the Denver area, welcome to CO! Good luck!

  • I have done several cross country moves but not pregnant. Most recently we moved from OR to SD with a large Uhaul towing our car and two cats and a bird. We just made sure we had goals for our stopping points and if we got tired earlier we found a hotel. We did drive to MA to surprise family with the baby news in November, it did not make a huge difference for me being pregnant but I was more tired, so DH drove more often. We also made sure we stopped every 2-3 hours and I walked around as you need to keep circulation flowing. I was only 13 weeks at the time so that may not be a huge help, but I wish you luck in the move and safe driving!
  • A good set of rubber gloves for the cleaning involved with packing and moving and unpacking - my hands were raw for days after our last move.  Take all the help you can get.  Have your favorite snacks and foods handy.  And take it easy.  I was pretty sore after our move, and should have probably taken more breaks.

  • Start packing with plenty of time. MH is military so we have moved a lot but I was never pregnant for them, we are moving from OK to WA in 5 days so I'm slightly worried as to how it's going to be on such a long drive.

Even thought we have people moving us, just getting the stuff we're taking with us, cleaning, etc has seriously exhausted me so be sure to leave plenty of time to get everything done. We mapped out everywhere we want to stop for the night, booked hotels in advance(Laquita is pet friendly and we have never had issues with them) and plan to stop every 2-3 hours. We also decided to not drive more than 10 hours a day because we drove a lot of 8 hour drives betwen Oct and Christmas and it was only slightly uncomfortable then, so now I'm expecting it to be worse.

If you plan on stopping somewhere 15 hours away but decide at 8 hours in you just can't do it, just pull into the closest place, it will be worth not over doing it. Good luck on your move and safe travels!

  • We moved from Florida back to Ohio when I was about 15 weeks along. My OB said to make sure we stopped multiple times along the way so I could get up and walk around. He didn't want me sitting for too long and told me to drink lots of fluids.
