Essential Oils?

Do any of y'all use Essential Oils? I use the Doterra brand like my medicine cabinet. I did religiously before I got pregnant and not as much just being really careful. I am still using the tame ones Lavender and Frankincense. But do any of you use On Guard or Thieves oil when pregnant too? Just fighting a bad cold and would love to use them. Just wondering if I am being too anxious about it. Just thought I would see if any of you use essential oils?

Pregnancy Ticker

Re: Essential Oils?

  • I've used thieves while pregnant, but for a cold my midwife has had me use elderberry syrup. I have found elderberry works great for immune health :)

  • We use Young Living oils and I've been using Thieves frequently. I think it's the only thing that's kept me from a huge cold this year. There's also a blend called RC that is amazing for opening up stuffy sinuses and I've used that several times.
I also use lavendar nightly for sleep and peppermint for heartburn.

  • I use on guard in a diffuser

  • I'm bumping this conversation from a while back because it's the main one I found using bump search for essential oils. There was also some info from a silly AE post with some discussion here with @Jnnfrrose6 and @Caitlinrj who may have info to add.  I see bits a pieces of info when I search, but not one area, so I thought to add to this thread.

Please share your essential oil suggestions, best practices, ect for pregnancy, delivery and newborns, including breast feeding.

The only things that I have heard or have seen from research is not to use peppermint, as it can have issues with your milk supply if you plan to breastfeed. I use Doterra and I know people who have used it and been fine, but they warn against it as a side effect. Clary Sage can jump start labor so to not use that one, either.

Edit: They say that Clary Sage can help once you are full term or during labor, but they recommended to me to not use it prior to that.

  • I am just getting in to using essential oils and have the distributor kit and purchased some additional oils and blends.

I have found that for edema, (swelling), I find relief with a few drops of cypress and tangerine combined and rubbed on my feet and lower legs.

While we joked about it in the other AE thread, I will be using lavender during labor as suggested many places including these sites, Link 1, Link 2.

I also bought fennel for help with milk production for breastfeeding, for after baby is born, I see suggested including at this site.

Yes, I have seen this same information, that peppermint can assist with drying up your milk supply, so to use it if trying to dry your milk up, but to be very cautious if you want to increase your supply.

I also have seen the same regarding Clary Sage, that it is used after labor begins, but should be avoided in pregnancy until late in pregnancy or after labor starts because of that.
  • @abundancenow‌ I'm cringing when I read the above! You quoted me before I could correct my wording. Ha. :)

  • I use Young Living brand and found this site helpful with that specific brand.

I do see a lot of info regarding Doterra  brand regarding pregnancy, labor and breastfeeding and new born essential oil use.

I think the info is interchangeable.

  • I'm a big fan of frankincense.  It's great for your skin so it's what I used on my tummy after last time around.  I don't have anything to compare not using it to, but my c-section scar definitely got lighter as did the stretch marks.  I've been using it during this pregnancy this time around to maybe get ahead of some new marks.

I love Purification, Peace & Calming, and Thieves.  I'd put purification in DS's humidifier when he had congestion just to help clear things up, peace & calming for me to help relax, and thieves in the humidifier or in a spray bottle with water just to have on hand.

My friend is a rep for Young Living (really not pushing one way or the other, just where I get my info and oils).  She's got 2 LOs, so she's been a great resource for me.  She does spreecasts with information.  Here's 2 links parenting & child specific for some things she uses/recommends.  I'll remove them if anyone feels like I'm trying advertise or spam or what not.  Just let me know.

I have been using a blend of frankincense and neroli for many reason, but in part to put on my belly because I have heard it is so good for your skin.
It is also suggested for use on baby diluted.

I actually am still quite a newbie with the EO's. I use Young Living because they are 100% pure therapeutic-grade essential oils. Obviously this is their claim and I do not have proof of this. I got started because a family member sells them.

Anyhow, I have found many blends for different things on Pinterest. One in particular, I used last night on DH. He's been coughing a lot so I did a blend that I found for a DIY cough syrup. 1 drop of each: lemon, orange, frankincense and peppermint in a teaspoon of honey. DH said it tasted horrible but it actually surpressed his cough.

For myself, I've been using a blend called Valor (spruce, rosewood, blue tansy and frankinsense with an almond oil base) for my back/hip/sciatic pain. I apply is directly to my hips and lower back and it really works!

For my itchiness and stretchmarks, I use lavender mixed with coconut oil. I love the way it feels and smells and I do think it works better than your typical lotion. Sometimes I also add Frankinsense as well.

I've heard that you shouldn't use peppermint when breastfeeding as it may decrease your supply, however I've also heard that isn't necessarily true. Peppermint is great for headaches and morning sickness.

Lemon oil in water helps my acid reflux.

For delivery, I have heard that Clary Sage helps move along contractions. Obviously don't use that until you are past your due date.

Many people "annoint" the baby with Frankincense (1 drop on the head) for protection and bonding. Also a drop of Myrrh on the umbilical cord to promote healing.

Post-birth: I have heard many women using a mix of oils called the "morphine bomb" for pain. 5 drops of each oil in a capsule (00 vegetable capsule). Balsam Fir, Frankinsense and Copiaba. I am actually going to try this myself.

For baby: I received a blend called Gentle Babies as a gift and it's supposed to be great for many things. I'm going to make a massage oil with it to use on LO. Apparently it's great for colic and or gassy babies.

Like I said, check out Pinterest for some easy "recipies".

This is not related to your question, but I've been putting Purification on my mosquito bites and that seems to help with the itching and healing.

I love my oils so far! I just need to purchase some more.

I really wish I had been exposed to the oils when my son was just born. He suffered for about 6 months straight of continual ear infections requiring different antibiotic prescriptions, that began at about 6 months old just after beginning daycare. We finally found relief when he got tubes in his ears at 13 months, but I absolutely hated putting him on so many antibiotics prior to the tubes.
He has not had any ear infections since the tubes. He recently woke screaming in the middle of the night in pain grabbing his ear with the start of an ear infection. I used a blend of oils to fight it off and so far a few weeks later it did not progress. I used thieves on his feet, lavender and purification behind his ear and on his neck and gentle baby to calm him down.
It's important to note that for an ear infection, you are not supposed to put the oils in the ear, but behind the ear and on the neck.

I tried finding a PDF copy online, but couldn't fond the complete book. Essential Oils for Pregnancy, Birth & Baby by Stephanie Fritz LM, CPM. This website has a good summery of the info... https://www.bdabirth.com/essential-oils/for-pregnancy-birth-and-baby/
