I thought I wanted my tubes tied ??

Went to doctor today and asked her about getting tubes tied after baby is born. They will take me straight back while epidural is still in and do it in minutes. Then she talked to me about my age and I need To be sure this is what We want. She said things may happen later in life that would me me want another baby. Before talking to her I was dead set on doing it but now...??? I'm not so sure. It would be easy to do it while I'm already in hospital. We are pretty sure we don't want 3 kids but I don't know if that will change??? I'm just really confused. I've got 3 months to think about it but I don't wanna make the wrong decision

If there's even a question in your mind about it then I would hold off on doing it. I have a friend with 2 kids, she's 28, and she knows without a single doubt that she never ever ever wants another kid so she's getting her tubes tied. Her doctor tried to talk her out of it, same deal as yours, and it didn't even make her blink or think twice. An IUD is generally considered a good form of long term birth control that isn't permanent. That would give you some time to really come to a firm decision.

If all it took was your doctor mentioning that you might change your mind in the future to make you feel doubt, I think you aren't ready. Nothing wrong with that. Get the IUD or something else long term. While I'm sure it's easier to get it done while you're still in the hospital after your next baby, it's not like it would be a huge ordeal to do it another time.

I wouldn't do it unless I was POSITIVE without a single doubt in my mind, placed there by me or a doctor.  I am getting mine done after this baby and not once since I made that decision when I was 6 weeks along have I wavered on it.  I'm done and I know I'm done.  Done.

I'm 25 and know this is our last. But when my doctor asked at my first appointment, because I'll already be open on the table, I said no. Even the permanence of a tattoo scares me. I'd also like to donate eggs/be a surrogate, so that weighed on my decision. There are other options.

I'm getting it done I go back and forth some days but I have such a history of loss and pregnancy is so hard on my body that I know for sure I don't want to live through another mc and that I am not going to be the Mom I want to be while I'm pregnant. If we decide down the line we want one more we can adopt I just cannot emotionally handle it any more pain of loss and the fear the whole pregnancy. I also had really bad ppd last time and I am worried about it reoccurring

Even though I already have 2 with one on the way and I'm 95% sure we won't have a 4th, I STILL wouldn't make any decisions yet. Tubal reversals aren't usually successful, so I would wait a few years before making any final choices.

We are 100% sure we're done, but the permanence scares me. And I worry about post tubal ligation syndrome. So I'm totally on the fence and no help to you.

If you have doubts don't do it there are other ways until you're sure .. I'm 43 and this is my second child. my older one is 21.
I effectively controlled it for that long with other forms ..

I agree with other posters that if that doc made you second guess then your not ready yet for something so permanent.

Just wanted to give all you ladies a heads up about IUDs... My DH is an operating room nurse and for years worked in gynaecology surgery and now does every kind of surgery so he sees gynaecological cases too. He's told me nurmeroys times that he would never agree with letting me have an IUD bc of the amount of complications and emergencies he has seen with them. (Fine by me as I never really wanted one!) anyways just make sure you do your research and really talk to your doc about complications before going that route.

I agree with the others as well. If there is any kind of doubt then you should probably wait.

Like the PPs said, if you're having even the slightest doubts, I would definitely not have it done. You really never know what life could bring or how your feelings may change in the next several years. I'm older than a lot of you here probably (38) and pretty positive that this is our last one. Pretty positive, but not 100% positive, so I wouldn't opt for tying my tubes, just in case we lose our minds and go for #3.

If you want permanent sterilization in the future you wouldn't necessarily need to go back to the OR. Essure is an option. I'm with everyone else- if there's a single doubt in your mind, don't do it.

I'm just curious, if you ladies care to share why you are getting it done over your husbands?

I've heard the female version is way more envasive than the male version. And that the male version a much simpler procedure.

I had a tubal ligation in 1999 after having my third child.  My ex-H had a child and we had three together.  Four was enough.  I thought we'd be married forever and that eliminating the possibility of more children would help us secure the family lifestyle we wanted.  

We divorced when our youngest was 4 years old.  We both got remarried and he and his wife immediately had another child together.  I was extremely jealous.  My DH had never been married and had no children of his own.  For 10 years he helped me raise my children as a full parent partner.  Every day of those ten years I wished that I could get pregnant.  Every time my period came it was a cruel reminder that we would never naturally conceive a child together.  Tubal reversal is not covered by insurance and the coverage that we did have did not extend infertility treatments when elective sterilization was the cause.  Early in our marriage we couldn't afford the reversal or IVF so we stopped talking about it.  Ten years into our marriage and several cross country moves I ended up getting employer paid coverage that included infertility benefits regardless of the cause.  Unfortunately, reversal was still not covered, but IVF was, and fortunately over 10 years of marriage we had built up enough savings to be able to pay for the non-covered parts of IVF (we did 3 cycles at a total cost of $25,000!!!)

When I had my tubes tied I was in my early 20s.  I have regretted it every day since.  You never know what your future holds.  Hopefully divorce isnt in your cards, but maybe 5-10 years down the road you change your mind and want another baby.  

The vasectomy procedure and reversal for men is much less invasive, easier recovery, and affordable in comparison.  

Please consider all other options before you select tubal ligation.  I wish they would remove this as an option for women under 40 without a medical issue where preventing pregnancy is vital.
