Well this is nice....

Apparently our oven is out. Last night it took me 3 hrs to cook our dinner because the temperature would not get about 250 degrees. The stove top is now out as well. Anyone have dinner suggestions? I'd really like to take my time choosing a new oven, but I am lacking in the creativity department while not having one. We do have an electric skillet, but I'd prefer not to use it every night as I love quick and easy meals :) we also have a George foreman so that it may be paninis for two weeks straight! What makes this worse is we just had to replace our dishwasher! I believe both appliances were original with this 1978 house so I should have seen it coming!

  • any possibility of grilling?  When we renovated our kitchen we were without a stove/oven for about 2 months - I got very creative.  You can actually use the grill as an oven if necessary.

Otherwise we did a lot of takeout or things that could be microwaved (so a lot of frozen dinners - they sell mini lasagnas that can be done in the microwave)

  • If you have a crock pot I'd pull it out for tomorrow and do breakfast for dinner tonight. I'm sorry you kitchen is malfunctioning that plain sucks.
  • I'll be honest though, for the first couple of nights, I'd just be lazy and get take-out!  We did a LOT of pizza while we were renovating.  It was just easier, plus you have leftovers and can eat it cold if necessary

  • DH travels a lot for work, and has used his Foreman-type tabletop grill (DH has a Quisinart brand, almost the same thing) to grill chicken, pork chops, and burgers on it.  Do you have a toaster oven? You might be able to use that for some things as well, though you might be limited on how much you can get in it. You can microwave baked potatoes, and other frozen veggies as well.

It’s not that I don’t like you, it’s that I don’t know you. Stranger Danger.
  • Thanks ladies! I guess I just panicked before thinking through all of the options! I do have a crockpot, how did I not even think of that? And all I've tried so far on the foreman is chicken, I need to explore more :)

  • Sounds like you have a skillet and a crock pot.  Honestly get yourself a hot plate so you can boil water if you need to and you're golden while you choose your new stove.  I'd rather lose my stove than my crock pot.  Also, an electric Wok.

  • You can boil water in your electric skillet - it's basically a pot on a burner. I've used mine to make pasta, and soup. :) When DH and I moved in together we didn't have a stove or a microwave, so we got really creative. You can also use your coffemaker to steam veggies - just put them in the grounds basket, and let the hot water run through a few times. And yes, crock pot!!! I'd be lost without mine.
  • Crock pot and take out
