Calling the Tin Foil Patrol

At some point in the last week in one of the random hijacked threads there was a question about whether using tin foil to line a pan and then cooking food on a cooling rack on top would still have the same effect on food as if you just cooked in on foil.  What was the answer to this?  I'm assuming it was negative.

  • Or if you must line the pan, use parchment paper.  It peels off so much better, anyway.

  • I've completely switched over to parchment paper. I love it!
  • The only thing you can't use it for is broiling or baking at really high temperatures because it will burn, so I just wash the pan if I'm broiling something.  Other than that, I find I can pretty much always substitute it for foil successfully.

  • I was the one who originally asked about using foil in the pan for baking bacon. I can't stand greasy residue on my pans and don't have enough of them to designate one for bacon. (Plus that would guarantee that DH would use it for something completely inappropriate and start a kitchen fire or something.) I guess I'm going back to frying it in a pan on the rare occasion when we have it.

This is definitely making me feel terrible about my Mt. Dew addiction, too. I can't imagine what horrible things the acidic soda is leeching out of the aluminum cans. I've SO got to kick this habit!!

Have you tried baking the bacon without the foil?  I never line the pan and I don't have any problems getting it clean.  I let the grease solidify, then scrape it out with a plastic scraper or a spatula and then wash it really well.  No residue.
