Update on melatonin

Thank you everyone for sharing your experiences with melatonin and your kids.  We went with a chewable, 1 mg and started giving him that.  Well, I can't say it's a situation where we give it to him and 20 mins later it's 'night night' BUT, we no longer have to physically wrangle with him for 1-2 hrs prior to getting him to bed.  There's still a little wrangling but it's minutes.  Now he winds down and will sit and watch his favorite TV show (at a super low volume in a semi-darkened room) while relaxing with either mommy or daddy and then he'll either conk out or say "I want bed".

No longer do we have nights where we end up angry/sad/exhausted just trying to get him to go to bed.

  • Ish.  We started with taking the phone/tablet away and have switched him over to either watching something he requests to watch but only if he stays on the couch.  It seems to work for now.  The next step will ultimately be to switch him over to some other activity like a book or something.

  • P has been on it for a year probably. If we miss a night she will still lay down at normal time with minimal fuss but it takes her 30 to 45 mins to fall asleep without it. I stead of 5.

No, at least not in our experience.  That being said, he woke up last night at 3 am and didn't go back to sleep.  *yawn*

  • It doesn't (directly?) help with night wakings, but we have fewer night wakings since we started it 6 months ago with DS1. My guess is it goes back to the old sleep begets sleep advice from the infant stages. Now that he is not spending 1-2 hours falling asleep and is better rested, the overall quality of his sleep is better. Before it was not unusual for him to be awake for 30-90 minutes in the middle of the night of wake up for the day before 5am.

  • Glad you're getting some relief.
