He just got two fantail gold fish. His tank has a filtration system so I didn't know if that made a difference. This is the first fish ANY of us have had lol. Here I will post a pic...
We've been considering getting a fish for DS but I'm not sure what his initial reaction would be.
I would call the place that you got them at and ask they should be able to help.
He loves it. He had 3 gift cards left from his birthday LAST YEAR and he loves my nieces. Plus every time we go to get dog food he has to look at the fish FOREVER. So we used one of the gift cards to purchase the tank and the two fish. He loves to feed them and he even stands in his crib and talks to them. Yesterday for like 10 mins I heard "what you doing? what you doing fish?" "swimming?"
The tank was like $20 bucks and it had the food and filter system with it and then the fish were like $1.50 a piece. So even if they die or we decided we didn't want it anymore we aren't really losing any money. Non actually b/c of the gift card!
When I had a beta fish, I kept it in a bowl with no filtration and cleaned it out and changed the water once a week. That fish lived for over 3 years.
Goldfish are dirtier, but you do have a filter. I'd play it by ear and clean it out the first time when the water starts looking cloudy, then dial it back next time so you're ahead of it. Goldfish tend to be hardy. The club/organization I was in in college got a bunch of feeder fish for a project (goldfish of "poor" quality), and afterwards put I think 8 of them in a tank. There was a filter, but besides feeding them, none of us took care of them. Yeah, I know, but that's what happens when it's everyone's idea and no one actually wants responsibility. Anyway, those fish survived sooooo long, including through breaks when I'm pretty no one fed them.
Ohh i so badly want to get a small fish tank for K!!! She would love it! She loves animals (DH is pushing for a dog but to me it just like or worse than having another kid). A fish or two would be perfect! You're a cool mom!!
