? for babies with reflux

Today at Ben's 2 month visit the Dr said she wants me to try Zantac twice a day for him.  He spits up a ton, and eats every 2 hrs around the clock but isn't very effective at emptying my breasts.  The pedi thinks this is because he's realized that smaller, more frequent meals cause him less pain.  And the only time he's ever slept more than 2 hours is in the swing or carseat, which are more upright.  So I'm all for trying the Zantac if he needs it, but wouldn't he be fussy if it was reflux?  He's a really happy baby, and only really fusses if he's tired or hungry.  I'm just curious as to others' experience with reflux and the zantac.  How long did it take to start working, how do you give the medicine, etc?

  • G is on Zantac and so far it seems to be working. He still spits up on occasion or arc his back while eating but overall he is much happier. It seemed to take only a day or two to see a difference.

  • It took a few days for me to see a deference in LO. She use to gag after feedings, cry constantly and make faces like she had a horrible taste in her mouth. Now she only cries when she is hungry or tired. She gets 0.7 ml every 12 hrs. They should give you the syringe with the medicine and I just squirt a small amount at a time into the corner of her mouth until she swallows it. I still try to hold her up for about 15 minutes after feedings bc she still spits up occasionally. Hope it helps your baby!
  • My LO had the same symptoms ( especially eating every 2 hrs and not being able to sleep long periods of time) but he also gets very fussy.
I don't live in the US, so I don't know what medicine he is taking. He takes his medicine 3 times a day and we could see a difference after 3 or 4 days.
He is a much happier baby but still spits up a lot and cries sometimes in pain. He also sleeps for a little longer, 3 hours.
I hope u can see your LO feeling better soon!
  • Cameron is on Zantac. It took us a little over a week to see a difference but it's working now.

  • Carson is on Zantac. We saw a difference in a day or 2. He gets .8ml 3x a day. He still spits up a lot but he is no longer in pain after eating. And now he take more naps and sleeps longer throughout the day.
  • Jack wasn't at all fussy except during and right after feedings. So I don't think they have to be fussy for it to be reflux.

He started 1ml 2xday of Zantac on Friday. We also started supplementing with Enfamil AR. We saw an immediate improvement. He still had small spit ups, but no more projectile vomiting and screaming.

Luca was miserable! Crying all the time etc. I kept hearing a high pitched noise when he swallowed and finally had enough when he was reducing his feedings to 1/2-1 oz. and crying non stop. He was put on .8 ml of Zantac three times a day. It took a few days but he is like a new baby. If only they didn't flavor the liquid! He HATES the taste of it.
  • Zantac and Prevacid did nothing for DS1. Pediatric GI doc had him on Nexium and it was a world of difference. Don't be discouraged if it doesn't work, there are other options to try.
