Pregnant after 35

I think I'm moving to maternity pants

So  I am 10 weeks and have a little bump going. All my pants are officially tight so I am sporting a belly band today. I am thinking of just jumping into my maternity clothes. I think I have been hesitant bc it seemed so early. (last time it was around 14 wks). I know I am sort of rambling but just wanted to share out loud. I don't know why I am being so vain. I should just wear them if its time. lol

Re: I think I'm moving to maternity pants

  • I could have used a bella band with my regular pants for a while, but I found it easier to finagle only one layer so jumped right to maternity pants when had to give up my regular pants. So I say go for it!

(All I want to wear at this point are yoga pants! Before I was pregnant I would not have considered them work appropriate… now, well, I try and put on a little more makeup so no one looks down at my legs! LOL!)

  • You will be much happier in the maternity pants! I tried the bella band for a while but it was not comfortable and I felt like it was a wardrobe malfunction waiting to happen.

  • You show earlier the second time (or so I've heard). I think it's totally fine to switch to maternity pants now, if that's what feels better.

I am still on the hunt for some decent maternity clothes. Hoping to get a few things that work this week, because the tight pants are getting old.

  • I'm still trying to use non-maternity items when I can.  For me, it's not so much vanity as being cheap. :)  I don't spend a lot of money on clothes to begin with, so I don't want to buy much maternity stuff.  I have several blouses that will continue to work for some time and with the cold weather I've been able to wear leggings & boots a lot.   I did outgrow my last set of fat jeans last week though, so I hit Ross and they had a good selection of cheap maternity jeans.

Try your Goodwill! One near me had no maternity section, but another had a whole section devoted only to maternity pants. I've only bought one pair of maternity pants new, otherwise everything was from Goodwill. I bought 2 pairs of jeans (Gap) and 3 pairs of work slacks for about $20.

  • Thanks ladies. Some good laughs in here. I too, would LOVE to wear yoga pants everyday of my life. I also teach 10-11 year olds and I can just see one of them noticing the wardrobe malfunction whether they say it or not. lol

Me too! (being cheap about clothes)  Though i can't pull off leggings and boots.  I'm hanging on to wearing my same old sweaters as long as possible, though.  Still haven't found any decent maternity ones at any price.  Consignment stores and one goodwill find totally saved me for pants ... and generous co-workers.  I couldn't stomach paying more for one of those bands than I usually pay for shirts (or really for 2 shirts) but I got 3 handed down from someone who had a baby last year and they are turning out to be so helpful for holding up maternity pants - even the one pair I bought new slip down a lot (they are not too big - just so stretchy) and make me nuts and adding a band helps a lot.

About goodwills (and other stores) - finding the maternity section can be a bit of a challenge.  Turns out it's often with baby stuff not with women's clothes.

Back to OP, though - if your regular pants are tight and you're comfy in maternity pants, go for it!

  • Go for it!

I decided I needed to make the switch yesterday when I had to unbutton my pants before lunch. On the bright side, Motherhood Maternity is having a decent Buy One / Get One 50% off sale, so I rush ordered some new stuff before someone at work catches on that I'm on day 2 with the only pair of pants that fit me now.  It's amazing how quick your wardrobe turns on you when the only things you feel like eating are oranges, candy, and Stove Top stuffing.

  • Dooo it...probably around 11-12 weeks I got an emergency pair of maternity pants at Old Navy after a week at work feeling like an overstuffed sausage.  It was like the heavens opened up.  Embrace the stretchy waistband!

I always love the analogy to a stuffed sausage bc I can totally relate. Today I am wearing some stretchy jeans(non-maternity) but moving forward I have my dress mat. pants out and washed. I dont want the pinching waste anymore.

  • That's funny because I'm only 8 weeks and my clothes are beginning to be uncomfortable. I didn't think I was quite ready, but DH suggested I get a pair of maternity pants.
  • I started to buy at around 13-14 weeks when that belly band started to drive me nuts ! Old Navy has good sales and is say for me personally the low band works ok when your still small but those are now getting snug on me I had to cut the elastic, I'm now 18 weeks- the most comfy ones I have are with a full panel waistband! Look for the sales!
  • I was pretty thin pre-pregnancy and went to maternity pants around 8 weeks. 70 lbs later at 36 weeks, I've grown out of all the cheaper maternity pants I got. The stuff I got from Motherhood and the stuff from ASOS still fits.

The cheaper stuff sometimes only fit for a week and just weren't as comfortable. It's SO uncomfortable being pregnant I think you should give yourself as many breaks as possible.

I just recently found that ASOS site. Do you find they have good prices/sales? Are there clothes true to your regular size?

  • My belly band arrived in the mail, so I have been using that for my jeans that won't button. It's comfy for now.

I also broke down and bought maternity workout clothes for my Zumba class (oh, so much more comfy!) and I found some pants and shirts on sale at Kohl's - 60% off. The pants will work for casual or work-appropriate attire, so I am happy with that.

There is a maternity consignment shop near me that I need to check out, and I found a Motherhood outlet store with great sale racks. I am a bargain shopper, so I don't see myself splurging on maternity clothes unless I need a nice dress for something.

  • I've been in maternity pants since 7 weeks.. anything touching my belly hurt...can't wait for summer. .dresses all the way
  • Embrace the maternity pant.  It's the only time under the age of 70 you can legitimately wear elastic-waist pants in all situations.  That is an amazing thing - don't squander it.

  • I have one pair of non-yoga pants that fits. I have no idea where they came from (I think they were in a freecycle batch of clothes I got and the pants fit so poorly that I never gave them a second look), but I am so grateful for them right now.

Thanks for the thrift store suggestion... that's exactly my style for clothes that will probably only be used for a little while.
