Thoughts on Super Bowl Coke ad?

There's been some backlash against Coke's commercial where they sang "America the Beautiful" in several languages. What are your thoughts? Desecration of the song?

Here is a website with tweets from 'Mericans who are outraged:

  • I thought it was lovely. Racists will get bent out of shape about anything. ::shrug::

  • I didn't even think it was something anyone would get upset about until I go online...and I'm ashamed of a few people on my newsfeed on FB who complained about it! I think I need to reevaluate my FB friend list!

  • i love how so many 'Merikuns conveniently forget that WASPs were not the native people on this continent. Our bloody history of "conquer and assimilate" is, apparently, irrevalent when lauding the merits of freeedum!

  • I really didn't think it was a big deal - I think (and hope) the majority of Americans knew that our country is a melting pot. I think the outrage over this is ridiculous and mildly funny.

  • I didn't like the commercial, I thought it was boring. A lot of them were this Super Bowl. I don't get why people are getting all bent out of shape over it.

This is exactly what I thought. It was cute but boring, along with many of the other commercials this year.

I had no idea there was a backlash against the commercial, glad my FB feed isn't blowing up with that. Otherwise I'd have to call people out on it.

  • Meh. Our country is made up of people from everywhere, so I didn't see what the big to-do was about.

I was more upset that it wasn't a funny commercial. Seriously. What was up with all the sappy crap? Don't they realize that pregnant people watch these commercials? :)

Exactly this! You took the words out of my mouth.
  • It seemed a smidge American emperialist since it looked like scenes from around the world but I could be wrong about the locations.

    I loved it!

My douchebag BIL posted on FB right after the ad:
"Is it just me or does anyone else think "America the beautiful" should only be sung in English?"

to which his best friend (who happens to be asian and moved here in high school not speaking a word of english) replied

"There are plenty of immigrants with English as their second or third language that wear the American flag, proudly, to take a bullet and risk their lives to protect the freedom of ALL people residing in the US. This includes the ignorant, narrow minded, educated, gay, straight, Latino, Asian, white, black, and everyone else in between."

LOVE IT. I was trying to think of something to say about my BIL's ancestors obvs being all born in Amurrica speaking english, but I think his friend took care of him for me.

So true.  One of my running buddies just took her citizenship test this last week.  She was proudly wearing her red, white and blue and I have never seen her so excited!
  • If you watch the interviews from the behind the commercial, the shots were all over the country, but all in the United States.

Personally, I thought it was beautiful.

When DH and I saw the commercial last night we were both trying to guess languages so I just had a fuzzy memory of the places.  I watched just watched it again and am amazed we have places that look that tropical in the US.  Then again, I'm from the Midwest and haven't seen much of the US, so what looks kind of like Thailand to me is probably Hawaii.

ETA I got a bit choked up watching the commercial last night and just found the behind the scenes thing on youtube to figure out where the surfing/tropical stuff really is but I can't watch it right now.  It's a five minute video but I didn't make it a minute in and seem to have something in my eye.
  • I see where the proud 'Mericans would be offended.  I don't agree with it, but I can see where they are coming from.  I, however, think that Coke hit it out of the ballpark since now everyone is talking about coke and I, for one, know I want one now...

  • Coke did this on purpose...for sure.

After the Cheerios/Racist Rants from last year catapulted General Mills into a huge media storm (aka known as FREE publicity) long after the game and into the summer...everyone wants that story.

I didn't mind it at all.  It was another sappy commercial amongst WAY TOO MUCH SAP this year.  My fave was the new bi-racial Cheerios one and RadioShack (and I did like the Budweiser puppy one).

  • I just watched the ad because I have been seeing the contraversy all over FB and I had noticed this post so I was curious to see what the big deal is. I thought it was a very nice commerical, crazy for people to get all huffy over it... Here in Canada our national anthem is sung in french and english they decided to mix it awhile back and people complained about that to because Quebec doesn't want to be part of Canada and people don't think it should be sung in french yada yada yada. Its ridiculous when people get bent all out of shape for something that is so small..
  • Update: Deleted 2 people over this today.  Social spring cleaning has begun!

  • The ad was obviously set up so that a bunch of bigots and assholes would get their panties in a bunch and coke would come out looking like the progressive open minded good guy. Just proves how stupid the crazies are that they took the very obvious bait.

I was thinking the same thing while i watched it. Also, thought the same thing about the Cheerios ad with the adorable bi-racial family. Cheerios was like "hey bigots, you didn't like this bi-racial family before? guess what, they are having another baby! BOOM!"
I love, love, love the Cheerios family! And the Coke commercial was really beautiful, too. The only thing that disappointed me about the commercials is that there weren't many funny ones, and I even saw a bunch of commercials that they air regularly. With the exception of a few (like these few touching ones and a couple funny ones), it didn't seem like they were airing typical Superbowl commercials. It was weird!

Don't forget the puppy that daddy agreed to and left mommy standing there shocked as could be! Super cute. :)

  • I liked it (and I'm an evil Republican *gasp*). People just love to be offended nowadays.

  • I thought it was great. I work at a Spanish immersion school, so all our students are at least bilingual by first grade. America does not even have an official language. The first people here didn't speak English...

It's sad people can't see the advantages of knowing more than just English. Of course, knowing English is important but why are we some of the only people in the world scared of knowing more than one language?
