how to pick a formula to supplement?

Also posted on the bf board but posted her too.

I have been sick now for over 2weeks and my supply has suffered. I used to pump enough for LO's 3 4.5oz bottles at daycare but recently I'm getting barely 10. I am dipping into my small freezer stash daily now.

I think if this keeps up for another week I need to look into starting formula. It's definatley sooner that I wanted to but if I'm not making enough not sure what else to do.

Tried fenugreek this week but LO's stool got really runny and increased to 4-5/day.

How do you pick a formula? Does my pedi need to be involved???

Re: how to pick a formula to supplement?

  • It's really a personal preference in my opinion. Assuming you are in the US, all formulas must meet FDA requirements - which means they are essentially the same nutritionally.

My LO was a small preemie, so we had to supplement from birth due to very low birth weight. We added neosure to my BM, which was incredibly expensive. When I started weaning from EPing, we introduced Target's generic of Similac Advance. Most generic formulas are made by the same company (I think it's PBM) and just branded different.

    Good luck!

  • J is on formula now, but when he was first born we supplemented. My pedi suggested a 'gentle' formula to compare it to BM. At the time we did Enfamil Gentlease. After we switched to formula we did Gerber Gentle Good Start. We never had issues with either.

  • Similac also has a formula specific to supplimenting mommas. It's in a green container

  • We found the best was the Similac for Supplementation for a few reasons. Mainly it does have slightly higher vitamin D and iron amounts because BF babies don't get that through BM. R really likes it too. We only go through one big tub every 3-4 weeks and I usually get a Similac coupon or two a month so it's like $22 for the tub.
  • DD would only drink similac, plus they give the better coupons too so it works good! :)
