Triggering too early?

Hi there, I'm on my 4th iui and went in for my ultrasound today. This cycle I was on 5mg of Femara days 3-7. Today I had 3 follies- 16.5, 16, and 15. My RE seemed really happy with the size and told me to trigger late tonight for an iui Sunday. I was looking stuff up on follicle size on google (blargh) and now I'm completely freaked that I'm triggering too early. What do your re's trigger at? I'm really worried now that I'm wasting an iui cycle for nothing. Tia ladies!

I went yesterday and had a 15.5 follie. My RE told me I seemed to be growing at about 1.5mm/day. So today would be about 17.5. I triggered tonight. When I actually ovulate, I should be around 19, if the math is wrong or I slow down, I will still be an 18.

This is my first trigger, so I'm not sure if this is typical protocol, but I went ahead without questioning it too much, I figure they know better than I.

I don't know what's normal this was my first medicated cycle but I had 1 at 18 Monday morning. He told me one more shot of my Gonal that night and trigger the next morning.

Well they grow from 1-2 mm a day so you could potentially have another 1.5 to 3 mm of growth by the time you actually ovulate so that could be perfect.

So even though I'm triggering, I still have a shot of having the follicles grow a bit more? I know the shot doesn't make me ovulate right away but I wasn't sure if it impeded follicle growth or not.

I don't think it does but from what I'm reading online (of course don't know for sure, just what I read) the ovidrel will help boost the maturity a little before ovulating. Plus almost everywhere I've read it seems 18 is what most RE's aim for (mine does as well) so I'm thinking that's what your RE was going for.

Thanks- Im just a bit confused because it seemed like standard procedure was to trigger after follicle size reached 18, and mine is triggering at 16, but maybe I just misunderstood

My RE doesn't usually tell me to trigger till my follies are around 20mm but my follies also mature fast and get to 24 by day 12-13 of my cycle. I think they base it on the person. I've missed triggering because my US was on day 12 and I was already ovulating. She may just want to make sure that you don't miss your window to trigger.

It does sound a little early, but a 15 and 16 could be mature. I think that 18-22 is the range that most doctors use though. Maybe you had some in the 12-14 range too that he didn't want to give time to catch up. You could ask about it next cycle if this one doesn't work.

I triggered last night, and my follie sizes yesterday were 17 and two 15s. They said they warn anyone with a 15 or larger for the risk of multiples. They should grow a bit more before releasing. Good luck to you!

The decision was likely based on your rate of growth and the number of follies, which varies a lot from person to person.  My RE waited until after I was at least 18mm, b/c there was only one follie and it was growing slowly.

You didn't mention your e2 levels.  That plays into when to trigger as well.
