Thrush and GSE

Has anyone used Grapefruit Seed Extract to treat oral thrush?  Lillians tounge is white and she has been fussier than usual and I am pretty sure its thrush.  I started treating her today with GSE but I am not sure how long to keep treating.  It is already looking better - do I stop when its gone or keep treating for a few more days?

Re: Thrush and GSE

  • My LO's tongue is white, but she just had a check up and no diagnosis of thrush. You may want to check with her pedi before treating her.

  • My LO's tongue gets white from milk, I would check with your pedi.

  • Ditto to check with your pedi to get a firm diagnosis.

As for the GSE, have you asked on the eco friendly family or cloth diapering boards? A lot of the ladies there are big fans of GSE.

  • Are they white spots? If it's just white in general I don't think that's thrush.  Do you have any symptoms of thrush? DS2 and I were diagnosed with it on Monday, however I just have pain in my breasts and he has a yeast rash on his bum, nothing in his mouth.  My midwife has us both using Gentian Violet and I only use GSE and TTO on his cloth diapers to kill off the yeast.

Definitely get a confirmation on the diagnosis.  I was pretty sure we had thrush on Sunday and my midwife appt was on Monday so I just gave DS2 lots of air time until I could get a diagnosis.

  • My pediatrician looked at lo's tongue on Monday- hers was coated white. It was not thrush, it was milk. She said if you could scrap it off/remove it, then it's not thrush. She said to try a wet washcloth to see if it would come off.
  • DD was diagnosed with a mild case of thrush this morning. The pedi said the white tongue was formula residue but the white patches on the insides of her cheeks and lips was thrush. It's actually more common to be found on the cheeks and lips than on the tongue. We're now giving her nystatin to clear it up.

  • No it doesn't wipe off and there is two patches on her cheek and one spot on her gums. My nips are bright pink but not much pain yet. I am trying to catch and treat us both before it gets too bad.

Thanks @moosebaby2011 for the suggestions on asking the other boards. I sometimes forget about all the specialty boards that are here.
