I've done some research on it, and it seems to be a different spelling of the male name Elia (Italian and Dutch form of Elijah according to behindthename.com).
@joy2611-- I know! All valid points. It's still on my list but I think it may be getting edged out.
Elizabeth goes so well with Josephine though.
I still love Eleanor, but the Elle/Ellie/Ella thing is a bit of a downer. I would always call her Eleanor, but I'm sure that her peers would eventually use one of those nicknames.
