35 and considered high risk?

Do they consider you high risk if you are 35 when you get pregnant? or might someone who turns 35 during pregnancy also be termed high risk?

I will turn 35 half way through this pregnancy and was just curious others experience.

  • If you don't have any factors, they should not consider you high risk.  You are on the cusp of being AMA, but likely they will treat you as so if you will be 35 when you deliver.  It really just depends on your doctor.

I've read a lot about AMA women feeling like they are treated differently when they go for appointments.  My experience has been completely different.  Nobody at my OB office ever made me feel old.  I also loved the extra testing and ultrasounds.  During my last pregnancy my younger friends only had 2 or 3 during their entire 40 weeks - I had about 6 or 7.

Good luck!  Sometimes being a little older has it's benefits.

  • I just turned 35 in Dec and spoke with my OB about becoming pregnant again.  Since I have no risk factors, she said she wasn't concerned at all about me being 35 and pregnant and didn't say anything about treating me any differently.  This is my 3rd child though and I had no problems with my previous pregnancies (though I did m/c in between those).  I guess I'll find out more at my first appt (still 2 weeks away).  I'll be seeing a different doctor though b/c my favorite doctor is out of town.

  • I turned 35 halfway through my last pregnancy and they didn't really treat me too differently. They opted to send me to the "high risk practice" for my anatomy ultrasound instead of radiology because they would be more thorough. Beyond that all of my additional follow up with DS was on account of him striving to be Goliath in size. This time I am 36 and my OB didn't say I was being considered high risk.

  • I am high risk this time bc of gestational diabetes, and being 35. I feel like I've already had more appts with this one than my first and I'm only 9 wks. I like it though. They offered me the cell free DNA test b/c of it so we get to find out the gender at 12 wks! My clinic only offers it to high risk so I'm not complaining.

I am in a slightly similar position, I'm 34 now, but will still barely be 34 on my EDD.  I don't go in for my first prenatal until next Thursday, so I'm interested in what the doctor will say.  I don't meet any of the other factors to be considered high risk...leave it to me to fall right on the borderline!

  • I turn 35 next week, and will be considered high risk this pregnancy, but only because of complications I had with my first pregnancy (my son was born 8 weeks early due to placental insufficiency/IUGR and pre-e).  So I will automatically be getting extra u/s this pregnancy, but as far as I know, it has nothing to do with my age.

  • I think ti depends on a variety of factors - I was 34 when I got pregnant with LO but delivered at 35... but because of my BMI I was considered "moderate risk" and was treated as though I had GD in the third tri, even though I passed the GD 1 hr with flying colors.

This time I'm 36 and will (barely) still be 36 when baby is born, and I'm still overweight, but a little lighter than at the start of my last pregnancy, which (unless I gain 5 lbs in the next two weeks, which is entirely possible because I'm eating like a savage), keeps me out of the BMI category of needing special monitoring.  So I'm AMA but low risk (as of today - that might all change a week from monday at my NP appt).

  • I don't think 35 makes you high risk - but they will monitor a bit closer. I'm now 35 - but I am high risk because of a laundry list of complications in previous pregnancies.

  • I just turned 35, but my BMI is high.  I know they said that I am AMA and high risk, but am not sure if age has anything to do with it.

  • This is our first and I'm 35. My doctor didn't seem at all worried about me being a "high risk" pregnancy just because of my age. Even after I told her that my mom was about the same age when she had me and she had some issues, my doctor said, "Good to know - but I'm not really going to worry about it." I think there are still doctors taht see anything over 35 as "old", but I don't think a lot of doctor's see it quite like the danger zone it was, say when our mom's had us.

What is the BMI that they monitor?  I had just started to really loose pregnancy weight from #2 when I found out I was pregnant.
