waking up crying

Our little guy has started waking up crying ever so often during the night. He took an early nap today and was in bed by 6:40 pm and just woke up crying. I've done some reading and it sounds like maybe it's related to separation anxiety. Anyone have any experience with this? Any suggestions, tips, etc ... are greatly appreciated.

I read an article that said to try and let them go back to sleep by themselves, keep the light low, no paci, no voice and don't pick them up. But I just can't do that. He's really crying, with real tears. It breaks my heart.

He didn't wake up at all last night but was up 3 times the night before. He doesn't wake up from his naps and in fact, never wakes up crying. He's always a happy, smiley baby and usually just sits in his bed and plays until we hear him.

TIA!!

  • Thanks for the advice so far. I should have added that he's a very good sleeper. (I hate to talk about it so I don't jinx us. LOL) He actually did okay last night. After that incident, he woke up about 3:30 and bebopped for a bit but went back to sleep. We didn't go in his room at all. Then he woke up to stay at 7 am.

As far as teething, I think he's been working on it for months but we can't see any teeth yet. I can def feel where his gums are hard when he bites me knuckle though. So it's a def possibility that maybe they're about to break through.

I forgot to add that another article mentioned not feeding him solids too close to bedtime, as it messes with their blood sugar levels. He ate corn & sweet potatoes at 5 pm. Is that too close to his 6:40 bedtime last night? I thought maybe I'd try feeding him closer to 4, than to 5.

@Usm123 - he did burp real big after I picked him up and rocked for a bit. But I'm not sure if this is a coincidence or if he's done it everytime. My hubby usually goes in when it's the middle of the night and he tries not to pick him up. He usually just has to give him his lovey, turn on Scout and he calms down. It just seems like maybe it's getting worse.

    Ugh!! Thanks again ladies!!!

  • JEPES1348 - thank you!!! We took this picture to show our relatives that live far away that he holds his mouth open when he's ready for the next bite, and I'm not moving fast enough. LOL!!!

  • I have no advice to add since I'm in the same boat but worse, haha.
I'm all over the place with whether it's separation anxiety, reflux, gas, teething..I change my mind everyday on what I think the problem is. And nothing I've tried has worked!
I will not let him CIO..we tried it for 3 days just during his naps and it made his reflux so much worse! And it was really hard on me, I just can't do it - but definitely don't judge others who can, if someone wants to come sleep train my baby for me I'm cool with that haha.
So I'm out of options and any new ideas...If you find one that works pass it along haha! But sounds like he's getting under control quickly for ya :)
  • Well ... I started feeding him at 4 pm instead of 5 pm and he hasn't woken up crying since then. So maybe it was related.
