Short Luteal Phase Question (Loss briefly mentioned)

Hi everyone, I'm looking for some advice prior to contacting my new OBGYN (if I end up needing to). I've been charting the past 4 months or so (sorry I don't have anything linked to my Bump account yet, I'm usually on here on mobile) and FF has analyzed that my luteal phase is 10 days, on average (min. 9 days, max. 10 days). I had a MC in August so I don't know what it was prior to that as I wasn't charting.

From reading online, the average luteal phase is about 14/16 days, and some places said 10 can be on the lower end, thus causing pregnancy complications. For those of you who have been TTC and have had this issue, or know more about this, would you recommend I mention it to my doctor?

I'm a new patient there and transferred after my original OBGYN retired right before began TTC. My husband and I have been TTC for 13 months altogether. I'm not sure IF I should call and ask about testing for it, and if so, how to word it or bring it up? Would I speak directly to my OBGYN or mention it to the receptionist and let her go from there? Or is this not something I should look into yet?

Thanks for your input :)

From what I've read, 10 is on the low side, but isn't necessary considered LPD.

You can certainly mention it, but typically a short LP/LPD isn't assessed unless your LP is consistently 9 days or less. 10 is on the low end, but still considered ok. Also, it can take several months after a loss for things to level out. My LPs were shorter (10-11 days) for about five months after my loss, then lengthened out to where they're now around 15 days.

Agreeing with PPs. If you have been trying for 13 months, and had a loss then you'll most likely want to speak with an RE. They can do all the necessary testing.

If you go to an OB only, they don't usually understand much about how to help you conceive, but they can get you the referral to the RE. If the OB offers you unmonitored clomid, don't take it. Just see the RE.

EDIT: Also, I'm sorry for your loss. I also have a 10 day LP. And the cycle after my miscarriage, my LP went to 9. I was told that a 10 day LP isn't great but also isn't something to worry about unless there are other issues along side it.

My LP is generally 10-12 days. My doctor was more worried about the fluctuating length than how short it is. She said that as long as it's in the double digits, you're ok.

I'm sorry about your loss. If you do choose to contact a doctor, I know the women around here recommend going straight to an RE, not an OBGyN.

I'm sorry for your loss and everyone has given good advise. I just want to add one thing some Dr's won't see you unless it's been a year of trying but if you get preg and have a MC they start from the date of the mc. Same goes with some insurance coverage.

This wasn't the case for me but I'm strictly OOP and I'm 39 but I've read a lot on here of women that are having to wait.
    Fucking bump!!!!

Just wanted to high jack this thread for a second to ask a question about LP's as @amandarene112 peaked my interest. My LP's are never the same. I have had a few 10 day LP's and an 8 lp and 12 day lp. Is this cause for concern?

@ Rseed - I'm sorry for your loss. When I started using FF, my LPs were normally 9 or 10 DPO. One month, it was 7DPO and FF alerted me that I might need to see my doc. My doc was not really very helpful and he was obviously in a hurry. Around the time I saw my doc, I started a weight-loss program and as I've been losing weight, my LP has actually lengthened. (Although it may also have to do with cutting out caffeine completely. I was a big Coke Zero & coffee drinker before.) For the past couple of months, my LP has been 12DPO which is average. It's something to be aware of, but there could be normal reasons for it being low. Just talk with your doc.

@Lomcmuffin - My doc said that fluctuating LPs are more to look into than low ones. I would mention it to your doc.

I am so sorry to hear of your loss.  FWIW mine shift from about 11-14 days with one random 10.  I have had my progesterone levels tested and it was normal.  As PPs have said, you are definitely at the point where seeing an RE would be good.  GL!

@Lomcmuffin You may want to mention it to your doctor. After a through look at my charts, my doctor told me to let her know if it gets any longer or shorter than 10-12 days for more than a month, and that if I end up needing an RE, this should be one of the first things I mention. But, I had a loss five years ago, and after that I had a few years of 6-9 day LPs, so I think that factors into her worry.

Thanks so much ladies. I really appreciate the input. I decided to wait another month or two before meeting with an RE or going to my OBGYN. While we HAVE been trying for 13 months, I also went off BC the first month we began trying, not prior to, so I do know that those few months after I went off BC were irregular and I was unlikely to get pregnant then. My cycles are more consistent now, but I want to chart a little bit more so I can see if my Luteal phase remains the same or changes again as it's been only 4.5 months since my MC. I don't want to jump the gun, but also won't put it off for longer than 2 cycles. Hopefully I'm making a smart decision!
