Eczema

Our little guy has developed a few patches of eczema on his tummy. They just look like little red patches of scaly/itchy skin. Our last pedi told us to use hydrocortisone cream and then put a thin layer of petroleum jelly over it. Our new pedi confirmed but told us to also use a lotion that includes petroleum all over his body. So my question is, has anyone found a lotion that works? The hydrocortisone/pet jelly clears it up within a few days but it starts to reappear within a few more days after I stop it. I'm using the Aveeno baby right now. TIA!!!

Re: Eczema

  • Aquaphor works moderately well for us. I use CeraVe cream for my own eczema and asked the dermatologist about it for J. So far it's working really well!

  • Is this a cream for babies? Or just the same cream we would use as adults?

Aquaphor is for babies, CeraVe is for adults. I would double check with your pedi before using the CeraVe just in case there is anything that's not suitable for babies. J was 20 months when we started using it.

There's mamas on the cloth diapering board currently battling some epic eczema. So far Waxelene and goat's milk lotion are getting a lot of love. Though Waxelene is a petroleum jelly alternative, so you may not be looking for something like this. But the goat's milk lotion and soap seem to work for several that have chimed in.

Eta: I have never used either product, so I can't speak from personal experience.

  • Thank you!!!

Is it normal for it to just be a few small patches in a specific area? I haven't seen spots anywhere else on his body. Or does it spread?

  • We battle it big time. we alternate between the hydrocortisone and an rx cream that I don't know the name of. For a wash...we use california baby eczema and for lotion aveno eczema therapy...we are controlling it but he still gets little patches here and there.

  • Thank you! The hydrocortisone & petroleum jelly clear it up great within a few days but it comes right back once I stop it. We tried the Aveeno baby eczema lotion and it seems like a great lotion but just isn't doing the trick on the patches on his tummy. I appreciate all the input. Sounds like I've got some more trial & error to do.

  • We use straight petroleum jelly (the aquaphor had something in it that made lo break out). I also noticed that the issue improved a lot when I switched baby soap. I was using the Johnson and Johnson naturals and switched to the baby ganics unscented. Seems the baby ganics does't dry out LO's skin as much.  So it may be a bit of trial and error to find out what works best for your LO.

  • I use aquaphore on their cheeks. For the rest of their body the Mustela Stelatopia cream wash and lotion is working well.

  • Ugh eczema has been a torn in my side with my baby for months. I have never spent so much on skincare in my life. So far we have not found a god send. We have tried prescription and non prescription, more baths, less baths. She has contact eczema. Allergic to dog and cat.
  • Thanks again for all the input!!!! It's really helped a lot.

I was doing some reading and found where it can be related to a wheat allergy. I really don't think this is the case but it did start around the time we started giving solids so I'm going to try giving him rice instead of oatmeal to rule that out as well.

In the meantime, I'm going to continue with the same bath soap (burts bees baby bee) that we've always used but not wash directly over his tummy. Also continue with the same lotion (aveeno baby) and rotate in the hydrocortisone/petroleum jelly as needed.

From what I read, if it's the wheat allergy it shoukd clear up right away.

Question - how many times a day do you put lotion on your LO?

    Thanks again!!!

  • We do morning and evening unless he's flaring up badly. If he's flaring up we will spot treat several times a day in addition to all over in the morning and evening.

  • Well, it's not the oatmeal. So that's good news. I actually started to think it was. We switched to rice cereal and it went away for a few days but it was back tonight. My nephew has celiac disease, so this really is good news to us.

Anyway, back to square one and will pick a new lotion to try next.

Thanks again for all the input.
