September 2014 Moms

Need medication for low progesterone.

The OB office just called.  My blood draw turned up low vitamin D (which I knew) and low progesterone.  Was anyone told this, too?  I have to get a prescription for gel and use it every night through the first trimester.  I also have to go for a weekly blood draw to monitor it.  I've got to admit, this is the first time I've been nervous.  I had a complication-free pregnancy last year at this time, and I am keeping everything crossed that this one is no different.

Any feedback or experience with this would be appreciated.  If it makes any difference, the level should be at 20 and mine is 14.

Re: Need medication for low progesterone.

  • I'm on Progesterone suppositories. I started spotting two weeks ago, and had some bloodwork done. I don't know my actual numbers, but my OB-GYN put me on Progesterone afterwards. I take it twice a day, and it's not a big deal. It's not uncommon. Once you start the gel, your Progesterone should go up to a normal level.

  • @MermaidsMagic - Thanks.  The nurse said something like gel suppositories (?) so maybe it's the same thing you used.  I'm not happy to hear you had low pro during pregnancy #1, but I'm happy that it worked for you.  I hope I'm making sense...
  • Thanks @camichael84.  Not sure how many times I need to take it, but I will find out shortly when I get to the pharmacy.  If this is not uncommon, I'm feeling better.  I really think I've been living under a rock.
  • I don't have any advice, but I know a lot of people that have needed supplements and go on to have healthy pregnancies. Sending out TnP you have no further complications.
  • I just switched to Crinone, which is a gel supp. It's really not bad. I actually have less messy discharge than I did with the other supps I was using. I'd suggest wearing a panty liner while you're using them, if no one else has told you this yet. My progesterone increased pretty quickly & so far things are going really well. It's a little intimidating the first time, but it just becomes routine & definitely worth it to have a positive outcome.

  • @beckysean11 - That's exactly what the nurse called in for me.  I forgot what she said b/c I didn't write it down.  Thanks for the suggestion, too.  I'm going to start it tonight.   Can I ask how far along you were when you started it?
  • I'm on progesterone supplements, the oral kind. I was at a 17. They aren't testing my levels for it again, they just said I would be on them until 12 weeks. After research it seems some doctors are comfortable with over 15, others say over 20, so I don't think you're so low to the point that you should be too freaked out about it. Easier said than done! Progesterone supplements are supposed to help support healthy pregnancies and only miscarry those with chromosomal defects, fingers crossed for you and the little bean!
  • I'm on progesterone suppositories, but I did the gel during several IVFs.  Just rub it on your thighs and you're good to go!

  • Thanks @elisemays.  If some docs are ok with over 15, I'm not too off.  Great!   :D

I started taking supps the same day as my positive test, so 3w4 or 5d. My levels are being checked weekly also & I'll probably be on it until at lest 10 weeks, maybe 12.

If you get the same med, it's super easy. It's already in a prefilled applicator, you just shake, open, insert & squeeze. I do mine in the morning, but take it whenever they tell you. Also, it may not be exactly quiet when you squeeze the gel in.
    ;)

ETA: My doc also likes to see 20 or better. Mine was a 19 at the first test, but I have a history of being low & have a loss, so even though it was close they still put me on it. My levels fluctuate between the mid-20's & mid-30's now.
