Table Manners (or lack of)

My son has this funny thing he does.  See, when he's done eating he starts throwing his food on the floor.  I've told/asked him to leave food on the tray and say all finished.  But it's not quite getting through.  Does anyone have any suggestions on how to break this habbit?  He signs to me that he's all finished but not until he's thrown a couple handfulls of food onto the floor.

Re: Table Manners (or lack of)

  • Thank you.  Maybe I'm making myself too frustrated by trying to teach him not to do that in one sitting, so to speak.

    He's 15 months.

  • DS is the same.  It's been going on for months and we tell him over and over we don't throw foods on the floor to no avail.

We now gives him a plate.  When he's done, he'll start taking the foods off his plate onto the tray (or sometimes flip the plate over and dump the food onto his tray).  So essentially he is still "tossing the food overboard" per se, but at least the food is contained mostly on his tray instead of all over the floor.

  • When he first throws a piece of food on the floor, the meal is over. Take his tray away.  Sign all done as you are doing it.  Give him time to catch on.

Don't drive yourself crazy with all this, he won't do it forever.
  • T, thank you for that advise.  I'll try it!
  • While it's annoying, it's normal and he isn't doing it to be rude. He is learning cause and effect.
