Just left my first ultrasound and the news was good, but the nurse was a jerk and kept saying I needed to make sure I don't gain too much weight. She went on and on about how I can't eat any junk food and only whole fruits, etc. In fact, she said I should try to stay the same weight across my whole pregnancy. I didn't think you were supposed to diet or try to lose weight while pregnant? If I didn't love my doctor, I would switch practices. Am I overreacting? I know I need to eat better and I'm trying, but I'm tired of feeling so sick all the time.
This is my second and I am about the same size as I was with my first. I am a 16/18. With my first I only gained 16 lbs and 6 was in the last week because I had iv fluids. After I gave birth I was actually below my pre pregnancy weight. I started to look pregnant in the late 20's last time, but this time I have a feeling it will be much earlier. The full panel pregnancy pants definitely helped define the bump. Also I never did loose what I call a B belly. I have a fat pad above my belly button that stayed and never thinned out to create the D belly. So no naked belly pics but I definitely did a maternity shoot and I am very glad I did and will do one this pregnancy as well.
So glad that I am not the only one. I'm paranoid about gaining weight. I had the lap band done in 2011 and had lost 145 lbs got down to a 12. Then had to have emergency surgery last year and gained 30 lbs. I just got married this past September and was trying to get the 30 back off before getting pregnant but my body had a different idea. I'm now roughly a 16 and 9 weeks pregnant and worried I won't get that super cute baby bump that almost every female dreams of. I think my biggest fear is going over 200 lbs again. 3 more weeks left and I will be going back to the gym for some cardio. Looking forward to my bundle of joy just hoping baby takes it easy on my body
I am an 18/20 and definitely looked pregnant fairly early. Maternity tops that tied around the top of my waist helped a lot. I felt prettier than ever when pregnant. At 14 weeks, people thought I was having twins. I was just glad to have a belly though, so I actually didnt mind.
My OB has always had a problem with my weight and wouldn't start me on any fertility aid after 2 years of trying. I had to essentially demand a referral to my RE who said that I looked great (had lost 35lbs) and had no trouble treating me.
Well, I was released from the RE and had my first OB appt on Monday and she said I should gain no more than 15lbs my entire pregnancy. Tomorrow I will be 10 weeks and have gained half a pound so I am a little nervous but I am going to try my best. I hate worrying about weight, but I guess I have my entire life so it's not something new...

@Birch113 I had my first appointment yesterday, and I asked about weight gain/calorie intake. I said I know the typical thing you hear is 300 more calories per day. I really wanted the guidance, because counting really helps me.
She said that because I don't want or need to gain 20-25 lb, which is what that extra 300 calories a day would likely lead to, she thought it was best for me to shoot for my "maintenance" calorie intake every day for my weight, which should help me eat healthily but not be gaining too much. Myfitnesspal has been a huge help to me, so I'm happy to still be able to use it, just to adjust my daily goal.
Last time my dietitian said that I should not increase my caloric intake at all during 1st tri. She said she'd increase my calories once I hit second tri. As far as how much I was "allowed" to gain, because of my BMI, I was told no more than 15-20 lbs.
I love all the pics of bumps in this thread! You all looked wonderful!
Oh as a warning to ftm I didn't get to hear the heart beat by doppler till almost 18 weeks. I thankfully got to see the baby on ultrasound more. But the extra fat around my belly made it hard to hear when most mom's could hear it.

Ugh not cool! I don't think I'll be getting an u/s until 18-20 weeks... if I can't hear the HB by doppler I'm going to go crazy.
i know it's a big deal to "not gain too much weight" for plus size mommies but let me tell you, We're only in the beginning stages. when i was pregnant with DS, morning sickness didnt kick in untill 8 weeks i lost 56lbs in 3 weeks because of it. so... my doc stressed to me it's not so much about losing weight ((though it wasnt my fault i could only keep down tea and a cracker a day)) or maintaning weight, or even ganing weight, it's about being healthy. making concious decisions about what you put into your face. not saying we all have to turn into health nuts, FFS i eat sushi when im KU'd like it's going out of style, but just be smart about it. cake? yes, all of the cake, how to make cake better? no frosting??? no problem, FRUIT, all of the fruit. So i know yeah, it's always gonna be at the back of everyone's mind, "OMG I GAINED A LB!" but for serious, if you're making healthy choices and you're drinking your water like you should, and you're feeling ok, then you're good.
I have a question for those of you who are on baby number 2... during your 12 week scan were they able to do the trans-abdominal ultrasound approach and get a clear enough picture? Mine is in two weeks and while I don't mind them switching to a vaginal ultrasound (hell I am so use to them after all the fertility treatments) I just wasn't sure how likely that is to occur.

That was really insensitive of the nurse to talk to you like that and I don't blame you at all for being upset! My NP was super nice about it, she just gave me some information on nutrition and recommended that I only gain around 15 - 25 pounds throughout the pregnancy. She said we'll monitor my blood pressure since I'm concerned about it.
Just do your best with eating healthy and staying active and you'll be just fine.
I think I've been lucky with my cravings so far...I seriously can't get enough grilled chicken, broccoli, and mangos! haha
@shanadoll I had an ultrasound yesterday and she was able to find baby with the abdominal just fine, AND I have a tipped uterus. Having a full bladder helped, she said.

------------'------------------------------ Thanks. I was pretty offended and so was my husband. I'm still committed to trying to eat better though. I wonder if I should complain and try to schedule appointments with a different nurse though?
My plan is to kind of avoid maternity clothing all together if I can. We're going to be rockin' our bumps in the summer so I'm hoping I can pull it off with a good collection of maxi dresses, leggings, and cardigans over long tank tops. I never have to dress professionally so I think it'll be doable. I'm a FTM so, maybe this is delusional, but I've known a couple of friends who made it though without buying maternity clothes.
I can't wait to get back into my maternity jeans. I pulled out tops for our trip to a disney this past week as well. This time we be so much better cause the bump will be rocking in summer. Dresses, yoga capris and Old Navy tanks here I come! @nstark2908, ditto. Everyone raved about them but I just found them to be a PITA. @ziongirl77, Old Navy maternity online, Torrid and a few pieces from Motherhood make up my wardrobe. Plus a ton of second hand from consignment/thrift stores. I just scored 4 pairs of Motherhood pants for $3/each. Old Navy has tanks that I lived in the last.
Maybe this is a dumb question but does Torrid do maternity? I love their non pregnant lady clothes, I would be thrilled to see some maternity from them. [-O<
I wear a size 18/20, but I'm also 6'1. I gained a TON of weight with my last pregnancy. Weighed in at 303 on the day she was born, it was humiliating. But, I definitely looked pregnant. I started showing very early, as I am now! Don't worry- you'll be a cute preggo :-)
Has anyone else been losing weight so far? I've lost 9lbs in the last 2 weeks because I just haven't had an appetite. Normally I'd be thrilled...but I know it's not usually recommended to lose weight when you're pregnant, even if you are overweight.
Last time I lost about 10 lbs during first tri. During pregnancy if you start eating healthier there is a very good chance you can loose some weight. I know my dr never mentioned anything about it. A lot of woman loose during first tri because of the nausea and hard time eating
I've lost 8 lbs since finding out I was pregnant. Same reason, the lack of appetite. I think it's common to lose during first tri, whether your overweight or not. And I've read that it's okay, depending on how overweight you are, if you lose in later pregnancy as long as you are eating healthy and exercising. Not to say we should be striving to lose weight, but that if it happened as a side effect as living healthier due to being pregnant that it is okay.
Im super worried I wont look cute pregnant too! Im an 18/20. Good to know Im not alone out there.
I have a twin sister with a similar build. When she was pregnant 18 months ago she looked great. I thought she looked better than she had in years! She ended up with gestational diabetes, and really changed her eating habits and ended up losing 20 lbs while she was pregnant. Her dr said it was completely ok because her baby was still growing appropriately and getting all the nutrition she needed.

My sister lost 30-40 lbs each with her two pregnancies BUT she was plus sized to start with and had CRAZY morning sickness that never went away. She basically lived on saltine crackers and water for 9 months. Plus both babies were born fat and happy (full-term one 9lbs the other was 10 lbs) so don't stress too much about weight loss
When I was pregnant with my first I think I was a size 18. I can't remember exactly, that was 3 years ago! But now I'm a size 22. NO worries. You'll look pregnant.
I glanced at another comment that asked if anyone has been losing weight .. well I haven't been eating a lot. Like I get hungry but I'm not starving during the day. So I'm hoping to lose some weight before the baby gets bigger.

I was a 14 when I got my BFP and a 16 when I went back to work.
This was taken right before I went to the hospital.
Really?? I guess mosts of the pics you have seen the last three years have been E. Yeah, I am a shorty.

Also I love this thread. I am an 18/20 and am pretty sure I will just look like a fat blob!
