Pregnancy after Pre E

Hi ladies, I need advice from Mama's who had preeclampsia. I had pre e with my first child and delivered her at 31 week, I'm still working on getting my BP down, and we are both doing well. She was born July 2013, and I was wondering if there is a recommend period of time you should wait to try to get pregnant again? I'll be 35 this October and I really don't want to wait too long, but I know my body needs to heal as well.

Re: Pregnancy after Pre E

  • I was told 18 months between deliveries by my MFM and OB. I suffered from pre-e late in my third trimester with DS with no BP problems until that point. This pregnancy I had HTN from the beginning, now regulated by Methyldopa with no problems. I had an US today and baby is on track. No problems with pre-e this time and I'm hoping it stays that way. :)

  • My High Risk doc told me that the chances of developing Pre-E again decrease if you are having a child with the same father. Also he said, if you do develop it, it tends to happen later than you developed it the first time.

My LO is 15 months. Will be delivering this one when he is 22 months. I developed Pre-e that progressed to E with HELLP at 35 weeks. Delivered DS at 35 weeks. Hoping to go longer than that this time around.

  • DS was born at 32 weeks due to severe pre-e. My dr didn't tell me how long to wait between pregnancies but to give my body a break before getting pregnant again. Well, we just got a surprise positive pregnancy test. DS is 5 months old now. I know it's not ideal but I'm praying everything will be ok. Definitely scared.

  • My daughter was born at 31.0 due to severe pre e. Today I'm 29 weeks with our baby boy! We waited 2.5 years to try again, mainly because I was so scared. I'll be 37 on Monday so I get the age thing. Get a preconception appt with your OB to discuss your options. You will be closely monitored. I feel like I'm always at a dr but honestly I don't care! I feel very cared for and much more confident as the weeks go by.

  • Had pre-e first time around and so far this time no signs only high bp on and off since the beginning. So doesn't always happen the second time then again I still have 7 more weeks. Ds is going to be 2 if I make it to my due date. Good luck!

My first MFM told me that the chances increase with the same father as your first child because the body develops antibodies that basically attack the placenta. One of the many tidbits he shared with me at my consult. My OB was not pleased, she referred me only for an US, not to have the begeezus scared out of me with facts that didn't even pertain to my case (he made me think I was going to stroke out at anytime). I hope your MFM is right and Dr. Doom 'n Gloom is wrong. Hahaha

Hello ladies!  I developed pre-e with placental abruption at 30.6 with my first and am now 11 weeks with my second.  We had a pre-pregnancy consultation after my daughter was born thinking they would tell us not to try again, but no one actually seemed concerned about another pregnancy (except me, of course!).  One thing we did learn is that I have a clotting factor that is not an issue until pregnancy.  To offset that, I started Lovenox injections at 6 weeks and baby aspirin at 9 weeks with the hopes that these will bring my clotting factors back to the normal range and allow for proper placental attachment.  I am also taking fish oil and vitamin d along with my prenatal just for some extra protection!  I know my case is a little different, but I was told that I do have an increased risk for developing pre-e due to the severity and early onset in my first pregnancy.  The hope is to make it to 37 weeks this time at which point I will have a repeat c-section.  My best advice is to follow what your doctors tell you and just trust them.  The worst thing for any of us is to stress!  Good luck to all!!

  • I had severe pre-e and HELLP at 28 weeks, delivered DS at 29 weeks.  My doc and MFM told me to wait 2 years to get pregnant again due to the severity and rapid onset.  DS is 3 and we're finally trying again.  Good luck!
