Level 2 test

Hi everyone!
So as of now everyrhing has looked great with our baby boy. The integrated 3 part test came back negative in all areas and he's growing right on track. However they noticed a little calcium spot on the heart which the dr and the specialist both assured could mean absolutely nothing. But of course it's still very scary. They said it's common in many babies and although it could be a marker for Down syndrome along with many other markers which are not present the odds are very unlikely. Especially with my age (27) health background etc. they said I could either get an amnio to know 100% or take a new blood test which is kind of taking the place of the amnio nowadays because it's not invasive. And they would be able to look at the DNA of the baby through my blood. The specialist said he really doesn't think it's anything and to try not to worry bc all signs point to healthy baby but they need to make us aware of everything. Which I appreciate but I'm also a worrier. He said like 99.9 percent the baby is fine but I did the blood test anyways and will hear back in a few days. Has anyone experienced this before ? Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you!!!!

Re: Level 2 test

  • My son also has a white spot on his heart. The doctors did not seem very concerned because I am 23 and my quad screen came back completely normal. I did opt to take the verify test though since the offered it. I am waiting on the results. Hoping it is nothing. Your little boy is in my thoughts.

  • Thank you so much for that. I hope your results come back with all great news. So you did the blood test too?
  • Yeah the Verify is a blood test. The quad screen is a blood test too but the Verify test for certain chromosomes while the quad was for certain protiens. I wasn't offered the Verify originaly because of my age but the white spot made me a candidate for it. They also offered the amnino test but I declined.

  • Yeah same, so much risk with the amnio. Even though the dr's say it is most likely nothing still really scary. Good luck!
  • This happened to me in my last pregnancy. My son had the EIF, but no other markers. I did the quad screen, and my results came back 1:9500 chance for Down Syndrome. I still worried the entire pregnancy , but he was born without Down Syndrome. Honestly, I know it is hard not to worry, but I ended up stressing for 20 weeks for no reason. If your doctor isn't concerned, which mine wasn't, trust in them. Good luck!
  • Thanks so much for your reply. It makes me feel a little better.
  • FX crossed for you and your family!

  • I would just take the blood test, but that's just me. I'm sure everything is fine.

  • Similar story here, my little boy has one spot on his heart, but my first trimester risk assessment gave me the lowest chances possible for Down's, so we feel ok about it.  I am also part Asian and this is apparently more common in Asian populations, so there's that too.

I wouldn't opt for the amnio, but if the blood test would give you some peace of mind, I'd say go for it.  Good luck!  I think our babies will both be ok :).
  • Thanks. I did read that about Asian population and that being common. I just spoke to a friend same thing happened with her and she has a perfectly healthy baby girl who is almost 1. I also read that it's becoming a big debate of whether or not it should even be mentioned when noticed in ultrasound bc of the low link to DS. And a lot of times it really scares the mom for no reason. But the dr has to cover their behind of course.
  • That's exactly what my midwife said -- "We don't think there's a problem, but we are required to tell you if we find this."  She only told me because she had to.  I'm not surprised that there are many healthcare providers out there who would rather not disclose something like this if they really think it's meaningless.

  • I understand they are required to say something but boy does it stress the mothers out!!! I prey for our babies everything is great and I have a feeling it is.

Just wanted to mention - there isn't "so much" risk with the amnio.  It is a very small risk.  Everyone will make a different choice, but as someone who did the amnio, I read the literature and saw that at that point in my pregnancy, there was a 3.5% chance of miscarriage (not because of the amnio, but just b/c that is the general risk of mc at that point), and the amnio only raise that risk to 3.8%.

The blood test wasn't the option I took, but people overestimate the risk behind amnio.  Yes, there is a risk, and yes the new blood test is the choice more people take these days, but it isn't HUGELY risky.
