Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Is this wrong?

We were thinking of going on a trip-a few hours away- maximum hours 4-5, and take the baby with us, but she will only be 4 months at the time. Would that be irresponsible? Should we just stay home, and make the trip when she's older? Have any of you gone to a 3-4 hour trip with your 4 month old?

  • We took LO on a 14 hour road trip (broken up into 2 days) when he was 5 months.  It wasn't a big deal, if anything it's easier to travel with them at this stage before they start really getting mobile.
  • Why not?  We've taken DS on a couple trips into the city starting at 1 month (we live in a small town and the nearest big city is 3 hours away).  Just be prepared for the trip taking you a little bit longer than normal.  We usually stop halfway through the trip so I can feed DS and do a diaper change.
    This!!  Go for it.

  • Go for it!  We took LO on a 4.5 hr road trip at 2.5 months...just timed it to where he slept most of the way there and back :)  good luck!

Ditto this. Just try to time your trip so your DD will nap/sleep during most of the trip/time in the car.
  • We took LO on a 9 hour trip at 4 months - go to home for Christmas.  The trip there was great and he slept most of it.  The trip back was a little more difficult - he had a crying fit in the middle of it.  But it's doable.
  • You will be fine.... Go for it!

  • Trips are great with a baby that sleeps well in the car! We took a 22 hour trip when LO was 4 months and she slept on her normal schedule which let us drive straight through the night.
  • Not irresponsible at all, but lots of planning and patience will be key.  We took LO on what is normally a 5 hour car trip when he was 8 weeks old.  We made 3 planned stops for feedings and it ended up taking 7 hours but he was snoozing happily for most of the trip.

Just make sure you prepare for the fact that the trip will take a while, and you'll be fine!

  • We did a 6hr drive when DD was 9 weeks old.  She slept nearly the whole trip and every time we stopped we made sure to pull her out of her carseat and have some stretch time for a bit before getting on the road again.  Just plan to make a few stops and to take your time :-)
