Twin Birth Story

On December 1st I was in the living room laying on the couch watching DH put together the dresser for the nursery. I stood up and felt some extra leaking but nothing major and even commented on it to DH and we both said maybe I peed myself and laughed! I went to the bathroom and took a few steps out of it only to leak again but I still didn't think much of it as I had been laying down and thought maybe discharge had pooled inside me. I made cookies, took a bath, and went to bed for the night.

On December 2nd I went to work. Around 9:30 AM I felt more leaking and it just didn't seem right but I didn't want to overreact. I went to lunch, used the bathroom after, and in 15 minutes I had leaked through my underwear and looked like I peed my pants! Now I knew something wasn't right! I called DH first and told him to be prepared. I then called my OB and they said to come in and if I ruptured I would be here for awhile. My principal drove me (since I was at work) to the hospital and DH met us there. Soon after arriving it was clear I had ppromed at 26 weeks with a water break on Baby A. I was admitted and given antibiotics, fluids, and magnesium sulfate. I also received the steroid shot for lung development. The first 2-3 days were truly a whirlwind.

I had NSTs 3 times per day and an ultrasound with MFM weekly. I continued to leak but minimally. My first goal was 34 weeks. Then it became 32 weeks. And then we were told that we probably wouldn't make it to 32 weeks and if I went into labor I would go fast. They were completely right....

DH and his parents came to visit on January 4th for DH's birthday. I got to go on a wheel chair ride with them and the nurse. When we got back I was put on the monitors and thought I was feeling some minor cramping. I mentioned it to the nurse but also told her because Baby A was so low that monitors made me feel crampy. She took them off and told me if it continues I had to tell her and would be put back on the monitors. I used the bathroom and had more leaking then normal. I was still cramping. I then leaked through my clothes which wasn't normal. I was put back on the monitors but no contractions were being picked up. The on call OB was called and she said she wasn't concerned. The pain grew worse and I was moaning and couldn't get comfortable. I felt ridiculous to be in so much pain since these weren't contractions....or so we thought since they weren't being picked up. As the pain increased, the on call OB was called again. I was informed she would be in in 20 minutes and remember thinking I was going to die of pain in that amount of time. When the OB got there she checked me and her face completely changed. She informed me we would be going for the c-section (Baby B was transverse) NOW. I was 7 cms dilated! I remember asking her how soon I would have my babies and she said in less than a half an hour and that's when I freaked. Right before I was prepped for the c-section my DH said he then could see contractions being picked up but before then there was nothing!!!!! I was wheeled into the OR and I remember telling them at least 3 times I felt the need to push!!!! I was prepped for the epidural which took a few tries and DH got to come back in. In a short time one baby was born. I asked them if it was our boy or girl and they all kind of laughed and said we don't know we didn't look!!! I then asked if it was the bottom or top baby and they said the bottom baby so I knew it was my girl! After 33 days of hospital bed rest, Karley Grace was born at 30 weeks 6 days at 8:13 P.M. weighing 3 lbs 7.4 oz. Bentley James was born a minute later at 8:14 P.M. weighing 3 lbs 12 oz. I had my first minor cramp around 4:30 P.M. and in less then 4 hours the babies were born!

They are now 3 weeks and 2 days old and I couldn't be more in love!!!
