Cloth Diapering

Wet Bag Leaks Help!

So i decided to make my very own diaper pail wet bags and two small ones…cheaper, I'd figure. I put them in the dryer for 20 after and when i put some water inside to test it out, it was leaking from the bottom and bottom corners…UGH! anyone else have this problem? Or will it still be ok to use for my cloth diapers when our LO comes :( I'm so sad.

Re: Wet Bag Leaks Help!

  • The pail liner I made came apart at the seams really quickly but I just used freebie PUL I got and it took several pieces to get it big enough...I think there were just too many seams and I sort of rushed through it so it's pretty poorly done. I just ended up ordering a few. Where is yours leaking?

I made a smaller wetbag with fabric on the outside and I've never had any issues with it. I also took one of my favorite zipper bags and sewed a water proof lining on the inside from a cheapie swim bag and it works fabulously.

I wouldn't use a bag that leaks (yuck) especially out and about. If your bags are just for your diaper pail at home you can always try them out when baby arrives and see how they do.

  • thanks. it leaks at the bottom seams. It's sad because i didn't rush through it or anything. I used the general stitch length 3 and poly thread so i don't think its too many stitches. i bought the pul at joanns i had a coupon so it was about 6 a yd.

  • What kind of seams did you use? A single straight stitch might not do it. Weight could cause the needle holes to open up a bit, or the corners might not be overlapped enough. If you didn't already, try adding a second seam just outside the first to reduce the pressure.

I haven't heard good things about PUL from Joanns but definitely check out the things Mrshudson suggested. I hope they work for you. It's such a bummer to sew something only to find out it doesn't work quite like you envisioned it :(

  • Yes, French seams are more leak resistant. I'm not sure I'd trust it to completely hold water in, but I try not to put anything super soaked in my wet bags.

  • yes I only did a straight stitch. I honestly didn't put much water in maybe about a cup. if it can't even hold a cup of water, then its such a bummer because dirty prefolds don't stand a chance. ok well ill actually try the french seams. I'd have to undo the bags though, wouldn't that make it worse? just a thought. Thanks so much ladies!

  • Your bag shouldn't have sranding water in it when actually in use (kept if you are spraying dirty diapers). The diapers should "hold" most of the pee and the bag just contains it.

You can also try and "seal" the seams with an iron. You don't want to touch the iron to the shiny side (that should be inside anyway). Just slightly go around the seams and it should bond together.

This is a good point. Maybe try a damp towel in there and see if it's still leaking. That will probably be a better indicator than a cup of water.
