Baby Names

Sibling names both ending in "ey"

We have a son Riley Keith and are due with a girl on April 19th.  We can't decide between Aubrey Jo or Claire Bailey.  I like Aubrey Jo better but Riley and Aubrey???  Do they sound too rhyme-y or would you even notice?  Also we might want a third.  If we have a third baby, I don't want another "ey" name but will that child look left out?  I didn't think anything of this until a friend pointed it out.  Help please!

Riley is going to be a big brother to a little sister due April 19th!!!!

Re: Sibling names both ending in "ey"

  • I don't mind the two together.  But, whenever I'm worried about a sibling combo, I always end up talking myself out of using the new name.

  • Would it bother me? Yes. Do I think it necessarily has to be a deal breaker for you? Not at all.

  • Can I just say that I love your son's name but I like Claire better. I do think Aubrey is a little too rhyme-y.
  • What about Claire Aubrey?
  • I don't think it's that bad. My sister's name is Naomi, mine is Emily and my brother's is Jacob. I don't think I've ever noticed til now that mine and my sister's name end in the ee sound and my brother's doesn't. I think it's NBD.

  • I don't think Riley and Aubrey are too rhyme-y really. Something about having that r sound leading into the -ee sound take the rhyme off for me. I do like PPs suggestion of Claire Aubrey, though. I'm part of a sibset that, unintentionally, has 3 kids that all have names ending in an -ee sound. Mine ends in -y, my brother in -e and my sister in -ie. There was definite name cycling to get to the right one, sometimes, but I think that happens a lot.

  • I think Aubrey is fine with Riley (although I prefer Claire between the two). If it was another name ending in -ley, like Bailey, then I would think it was too close.

  • If we name her Claire Bailey me and her will have the same initials. Jo is a big middle name in my family. I can't decide if I would rather have her the family name or share initials with her.

  • The endings would bother me so I would go with Claire.

  • I decided against using two girls names ending in the "ie" sound (Natalie and Lily) so it would bother me. But that's just me and my perfectionism, I wouldn't bat an eye at anyone else doing it.

That being said, I prefer Claire to Aubrey anyway.

  • I have a dd named Riley and am expecting another baby girl. I'm leaning towards picking a name that is longer but then still has a nickname that ends in the ey sound. Ex Madeline nn maddie. Having the actual name end in the same name was bugging me as too matchey matchey. I love the name Claire!

  • Personally I would definitely stay away from another -ey name.    I think its completely overthinking it that a child would notice that his/her name ended in a different sound than their siblings and even if they did   you should be teaching them things like that in life simply don't matter ;)

    Claire is lovely!

  • I wouldn't notice and if I did, I wouldn't mind.  My 2 kids both have names that end in -el, I think it's fine.

  • My kids will probably have names that end in the same sound. Just by default. It's what I like.

    I'm not worried about it.

My 3 sibs and I have the same ending sounds and no one has every noticed or cared until I started naming my own kids. I asked my mom about it and she was all, "Hey, it's what we like. We didn't plan it."

  • I dislike Aubrey for a girl, but even if I liked it I think Riley and Aubrey are too much.  And people will talk.  We have friends that we're always joking about because their kids names end in -ah (Noah and Hannah), so it's something people pick up on.
