Adoption

Weekly Check-in - January 27th -

Hello and Happy Monday!  If you don't mind, I figured I would change up the format a bit.

1.) How are you related to adoption/fostering and what type (DIA, IA, Foster to Adopt, etc) are you involved with?

2.) Where are you in the process?  Any accomplishments or set backs?  Feel free to vent!

3.) AR-QOTW (adoption related question of the week) - How did you family take the news of your plans to adopt/foster?  Supportive? Confused? Angry?

4.) NAR-QOTW (Non-AR) - Have you read any good books/seen any good movies lately?

Let me know if you ladies like these questions better or what else we can include.  Any feedback would be great!!

Re: Weekly Check-in - January 27th -

  • 1.) PAP going through DIA

2.) We did our Video Profile yesterday and I'm designing our actual profile and hope to have the rough draft to our SW by this weekend!  Our video sucked but from what I've seen online, they pretty much all suck... haha.

3.) My grandfather is very, very old school so he was not supportive AT ALL in the beginning.  He kept trying to talk me into IVF treatments, which is an awkward conversation to have with your 80 year old grandfather but now he has come around to the idea and is 100% supportive.  The rest of our family was on board from the very start!  They just want grandchildren... haha.

4.) I am looking for book recommendations (hence the question.. haha).  I'm trying to read 52 books in 2014 and so far I've read 2 (and they were children's books) so I need some suggestions.  And I can't remember the last movie we went to go see in the theater.  It's been too long!

  • 1.) PAP waiting for a DIA

2.) Nothing. Is. Happening. Personally, I think winter in Minnesota is the WORST time to be waiting for any news... anything. Everyone is frozen and doesn't want to come out of hibernation!

3.) Our families both took it differently. My parents were right on board, wanting the grandchildren to continue. My father was appalled at how much adoption these days cost (he adopted two boys, my brothers back in the 50's)... The hub's family took it oddly. No one to this day really wants to get excited about it. I think they are just being reserved with their feelings. At least that's what the hubs and I continue to convince ourselves of. It's not like they are angry, mad, frustrated... they are excited (we think), but VERY VERY reserved with it all!

4.) Books... I'm still trying to get through Janet Evanovich's #20 Plum Book - I also read "Instant Mom" and I will say it was phenominal... I actually went back and REREAD the chapter about finalization this past weekend when I was getting frustrated with the waiting process.... it provided me a great cry and a lot of hope!

Movies... the hubs and I try to see one or two a month. We saw "Saving Mr. Banks" and I have to say as an avid LOVER of Mary Poppins it was beautiful, wonderful and absolutely perfect! We also recently saw "American Hustlers" and that was one weird film. There were points in it that were uncomfortable to be sitting in a theater watching it with other people, but then again it wasn't a bad movie - just went on my 'meh' list.

    Began the Adoption process 4/2013
    Home study Approved 12/2013
    .... and the wait begins!

  • Loading the player...
  • 1) PAP through DIA (that means domestic, right?)

    2) We have an appointment set for Wednesday to get started with ANOTHER agency, and so basically we are starting over again :(

    3) We haven't told everyone yet, because it is still so uncertain. Most of the people we have told are supportive, but some are a little pushy. I guess they think if we tried harder, we could get things to move along faster.

    4) I just started a book club in my town, and the book we just finished was The Book Thief! It was very good!

  • 1.) How are you related to adoption/fostering and what type (DIA, IA, Foster to Adopt, etc) are you involved with? We are doing fostering and foster-to-adopt and I'm the potential adoptive mother.

2.) Where are you in the process?  Any accomplishments or set backs?  Feel free to vent! We were licensed around October and now just waiting on a placement. Had a call a few days ago and when I called back (so mad at myself for going to the supermarket without my phone) my s/w had to call into his office to see what the status was of the six-month-old he called us about. Well, turns out in the meantime a family member stepped forward to take the baby. But had that baby gone to another resource family I think I would gone nuts and been beyond angry at myself.

3.) AR-QOTW (adoption related question of the week) - How did you family take the news of your plans to adopt/foster?  Supportive? Confused? Angry? I have very little family, so does my husband. My sister and nieces and nephew (who live out of state) are excited. My stepfather seems excited. My mother-in-law doesn't really seem interested. So weird.

4.) NAR-QOTW (Non-AR) - Have you read any good books/seen any good movies lately? We liked American Hustle, and recently saw The Heat on DVD, and liked that as well. Of course, two very different movies, lol.

2.) Where are you in the process?  Any accomplishments or set backs?  Feel free to vent! We are waiting for our lawyer to file for finalization. We have been waiting since the end of October for this. I'm pissed and I don't even know who to be pissed at.

3.) AR-QOTW (adoption related question of the week) - How did you family take the news of your plans to adopt/foster?  Supportive? Confused? Angry?  They were supportive and concerned.

4.) NAR-QOTW (Non-AR) - Have you read any good books/seen any good movies lately? Nope.

  • 1.) How are you related to adoption/fostering and what type (DIA, IA, Foster to Adopt, etc) are you involved with?

    IA from China

2.) Where are you in the process?  Any accomplishments or set backs?  Feel free to vent!

Our dossier is still sitting at the Chinese Embassy in D.C., and there's no word on how much longer it'll be.  So we still have a few weeks until the dossier is mailed to China and registered there and at that point, we'll start the next part of waiting - the wait for a referral.

3.) AR-QOTW (adoption related question of the week) - How did you family take the news of your plans to adopt/foster?  Supportive? Confused? Angry?

Everyone except my grandmother was super excited and supportive.  We announced our intentions to adopt in an e-mail to both sides of the family, so that might have helped the news to sink in before I talked to anyone about it.  While my grandmother made some very hurtful and uninformed comments early on, she's been a lot more positive lately.  She reads my blog, so perhaps that's given her an in-depth look into what adoption actually entails and how excited we are, and now she understands.

4.) NAR-QOTW (Non-AR) - Have you read any good books/seen any good movies lately?

All I read is adoption blogs. :)

  • 1.) How are you related to adoption/fostering and what type (DIA, IA, Foster to Adopt, etc) are you involved with?

Foster to adopt, I am the prospective foster/adoptive mom.

2.) Where are you in the process?  Any accomplishments or set backs?  Feel free to vent!

Still waiting for our licensing worker to finish our home study, then his supervisor has to look it over than the state has to do final inspection. Our LW said we would have a child in our home by this time next month but I don't really believe that since he said we would be licensed by Dec and that didn't happen. If it does I will be over the moon :)

3.) AR-QOTW (adoption related question of the week) - How did you family take the news of your plans to adopt/foster?  Supportive? Confused? Angry?

They seem pretty excited, mom and step dad keep asking what is happening, I know they are excited but I have nothing to tell them. MIL keeps making comments about how I should have another baby (a girl because I can control that). It is annoying when people say crap like that because we have decided to go this route, at least give it a chance. My dad and his wife don't really say anything, they are more the silent judge types and I usually find out later from family what they think of my life choices. Overall since I told them we were one and done I think they are all just excited about the chance at having another child in the family.

4.) NAR-QOTW (Non-AR) - Have you read any good books/seen any good movies lately?

I just read The Help which I enjoyed. The only movie that was not animated I have seen lately was The Wolf on Wall Street, I didn't really like it but of the animated movies Frozen was pretty good and nice to watch something other than Finding Nemo for a change.
