Tired Mommy - Need suggestions

Hello mommies,

I tend to read a lot on here but never really need to post for some help- but I do now! My daughter has been a great sleeper, even when we went through teething as an infant she did pretty well. Well she is now 21 months and for the past MONTH she goes to bed fine at 7:30 but wakes up around 1am EVERY night screaming for me. Non stop screaming. Now we did CIO back when she was an infant and it worked so well. But I can't do it now, she is super loud and I just want to hold her... I believe its teething (cheeks are red, fingers in mouth all the time!)... but I need some suggestions. What do I do?! Last night I was up for 2.5 hours....
TIA!

  • If you think it's teething I would give motrin before bed and see if that helps.

  • Thanks ladies! Sad part is I have been giving motrin. Last night I gave it at 1pm and she didn't finally fall asleep until 3:20.... I just think thats a really long time after being given motrin. Trust me I understand it will pass and its been a month of this so I am just wondering if maybe she is just used to getting up now and I think its teething, who knows?! Just needed to get some feedback. Thanks again!
  • We've had the same problem. We tried just doing the motrin and when that didn't work we gave DD a sippy cup of milk before the motrin and that seemed to work.

  • I wouldn't think it was teething if it's been going on for a solid month.  I'd be tempted to try CIO again at that point.  I don't mind to get up and do middle of the night snuggles but for a few hours every night for a month?
  • Its been on and off for a month. After 2 weeks or so we get like 3 nights of her being fine and then it goes back. We do not give motrin every night (I really try to wait on doing so). I think we will try CIO again... Sadly before my daughter could sa y"mommy" I did CIO so much better but now she can scream mommy I am such a sucker! Thanks again for all the advice!

  • Yup, now that DS knows how to say "mommy" and "please", it's MUCH harder to do CIO as he screams those 2 words over and over again.  We have sort of a similar situation as you.  We got into the habbit of patting him to sleep after he turned 18 months after some bad teething, and 3 weeks later, are now slowly trying to wean him off of it.  We've moved on to just reading to him while he lays in his crib, and for the past few nights, we just sit there in the dark with him until he falls asleep.  Our hope is that we can slowly move him back to falling asleep on his own again.  I feel your pain!
  • I second ruling out an ear infection. My LO had a double ear infection, and her only symptom was waking in the middle of the night screaming and not wanting to go back down. She was back to normal after a couple of days on antibiotics.

  • Checking for medical problems (ex. ear infection) is probably a good idea! If it's habitual waking rather than medical, though, you can try the "wake to sleep" method.

  • You don't have to do CIO.  We always bring DD into bed with us.  I get so much more sleep and so does she.  DH doesn't love it but CIO is not for us and bringing her into bed is WAY easier than us continuing to go back into her room to soothe her.
