Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Dropping the blankie:/

Ds is 14 months old and has grown attached to his favorite blanket. He has to have it all the time or else he flips out. Well here recently when I lay him down for naps or for the night he normally cries for a few mins then goes to sleep, but now he'll drop the blanket out of the crib while he's standing up crying. And he will cry for litterly hours till I go in there and pick it up. And if I don't he won't sleep. And he'll drop it maybe 3 or 4 times each time it's sleep time. I'm not sure if there's a way of keeping the blanket in the crib or if anyone else had this happen and they found something that worked.
I just feel so bad for him crying like this, but part of me thinks he throws it out because he knows I'll come back in and get it...

Re: Dropping the blankie:/

  • Yup we went through this. I finally decided that I would give it back to him once, and if he threw it out again, that was it. I wouldn't give it back and if he didn't sleep after an hour, I woudl end the nap and try later. Well the first time he cried for 35 minutes ( I was also nap training so I did checks at 5, 7, and 10 min) and then fell asleep without his lovey in the crib. Which I NEVER thought he could do. The 2nd nap he threw it out again but fell asleep after 6 minutes of crying, again without the lovey. After that, there was no crying and he stopped throwing it out.

  • That's rough. I would probably do what the previous poster said and give it back once and tell him you aren't coming back. Then I wouldn't go back in, although I know it's easier said than done.

  • LO had about a week where she threw out her lovey at bedtime, declaring "uh-oh!". After the first night of me giving it back to her FOUR TIMES, we came up with a new policy and I stopped picking it up for her.  After a few days she stopped throwing it out.

She will still throw it out in the morning sometimes, but doesn't cry over it-- I think she's just bored waiting for us to come in and get her.
