Burping help

So DD starts out the night with a 4 hour stretch if sleep, then 3 hours, then wakes up around 6 am grunting and squirming and looking uncomfortable and needs to be burped more.

I would love for her to be able to finish off that last stretch of sleep peacefully. The problem is that when I burp her at night, she has already fallen back asleep while nursing and is very difficult to get any burps out. Her body is so limp.

I pick her up upright with her head at my shoulder right after she finishes nursing, and I always get one big burp immediately, but nothing after that. I change her position, and also pat and rub her back. Do any of you other ladies have any other suggestions or tricks that work for burping while they're asleep?

Re: Burping help

  • Landon always gets up grunting and squirming. I wonder if it's from not burping enough. I always just thought that's how baby's wake up.

  • Julia does the same thing around the same time every morning. She actually is usually still sleeping but will grunt, groan, and sound like she's straining a lot until I pick her up. Then within a few minutes she usually settles down. I'm pretty sure it's gas because she farts a lot at that time too. She doesn't do this consistently at any other time than in the morning so I think it must have something to do with laying down for an extended period of time.

  • I usually end up lightly bouncing DD. I start the same way as kellydew and then if she doesnt burp quick or falls back asleep I'll stand up and bounce her a little and that will usually get it.

  • My little guy wakes up like this and like to lay flat to stretch out so he can poop. Usually this is his wake up time (somewhere between 7-8) so it's not a big deal. The other morning it was like 5:30, so after he was done piping he ate some more she went back to sleep.

My first would always be gassy from like 5-8 in the morning so he would sleep on my chest which seemed to be more comfortable for him. I did use gas drops for him, but haven't for my last 2 babies.

  • @suzalie /others - What kind of gas drops did you use?  We really make and effort for him to burp multiple times during a feeding but he seems to still have a lot of discomfort due to gas :(  He also gets the hiccups a lot and I'm already giving him gripe water when those happen and seem to bother him.

  • @jblank03 - we use Target generic infant gas drops. I bought Little Remedies brand but Julia did not like the cherry flavoring. Pedi said generic was just fine.

  • I am in the same situation.  My baby is 20 days old.  The last 3 days she has been spitting up so much.  In the night I change her, feed her (until she is sound asleep) and then burp her.  As soon as I put her in her crib, she is awake.  Yet, if I don't burp her, she spits up and wakes up.  I am hoping this is just temporarily!
  • The trick that works for Q is sitting him up and circling his body around. You can also lean them to the left and up, forward and up and then the right and up. I find making big circles with his torso until he burps works every time. I usually circle him 2-6 times.
